“Hold on. One of Victor’s cameras picked up something interesting in Harlan’s office a little while ago. I’m sending you a still. Well, their IT guy is, really.”

I hear my phone vibrate and I look at the screen.

“Fuck,” I curse, the second I see it.

Harlan has a file on Leanne. It’s on his desk, and there’s a picture of her with E.A., taken outside Secret’s apartment. He knows Leanne is ours. That picture, the way they’re looking at each other, it can’t be mistaken for anything other than mates falling in love.

I pass the phone to E.A. and he turns a whiter shade of pale.

There’s no way in hell Harlan’s going to let her out of that building now.

Chapter Ninety-Nine

Leanne

The last thing I expected when I left the apartment a little before eight a.m. was to run into Secret’s most imposing mate. Seth is waiting at the exit to the alley, leaning against the wall with his hands in his pockets. He straightens up as I approach, and he gives me a smile.

“Well, well,” he says. “What’s this? Leanne Leto running into trouble, despite literally everyone in her life telling her not to? Would it make a difference if I told you I think it’s an awesome idea to dangle yourself as bait in front of a prolific trafficker? Would you change your mind if everyone was telling you that you really should do it?”

“Can you at least wait until I’ve had coffee to start giving me a headache?”

“Fine, let’s go get coffee.”

I walk past him, and he follows me.

“Secret was upset after she called you last night. She thinks you have a problem, Leanne, and I’m starting to think that problem has nothing to do with alcohol and everything to do with how little you value your own fucking life.”

“You don’t know me, Seth. You just think you do, because you’ve had problems and I’ve had problems. Well, newsflash, everyone has problems.”

“Why are you doing this if it’s not because you’re stubborn, and it’s not because you think you don’t deserve anything good? Because it doesn’t make sense, Leanne. You survived something that would have killed most people. You found your true mates, and you have a daughter who needs you.”

“I don’t know, okay? I don’t know why. I just know this is fated. Just like surviving Frank Palmer, and meeting my mates, and even having Secret. All of that was supposed to happen, Seth. It was all predestined.”

“You sound crazy.”

“Oh, great. Tell me I’m crazy. Like that’s ever worked to calm a woman down or make her see a man’s point.”

“You’re fucking impossible, you know that?”

“Is that any way to talk to your mate’s mother?”

“Christ,” he mutters. “Whatever. Have a coffee with me before you march to your death, please.”

“If you insist.”

What the hell, I could use the pick-me-up. I didn’t sleep a damn wink last night.

I follow Seth into a coffee shop that’s on the way to Anchor West. He leads me to a table where two Alphas are already sitting drinking coffee. The big guy is in a boiler suit, but he looks more like a body builder than a maintenance worker. He takes a pack of candy out of his pocket and pours some straight into his mouth. I look at the other guy and wonder where I’ve seen him before.

He’s classically handsome in an almost understated kind of way.

“What is this?” I ask Seth.

“Sit down and find out.” He sits down next to the big guy.

I let out a sigh. “I seriously need coffee if this is some kind of intervention.”

The big guy snorts. The other gives me a charming smile.
