I yawn as I step into the main reception area. It’s been a crazy day.

“What’s next?” I ask E.A.

E.A. steps into Spencer’s office. “How are the extractions going?”

“They’ve started,” Seth says. “We should have fifty women headed to Goldcrest within the next couple hours. Lana went a little nuts when I told her. I guess she thought I was talking like half a dozen women. It’s cool, though. She’s bringing in more doctors and nurses to cope with it.”

“I didn’t know Goldcrest had doctors and nurses,” I admit.

“They’ve always had them for sexual health purposes,” Seth says. “But since we’ve got some rescue situations going in now, she took on medical staff and therapists.”

“So, what’s next?” I ask again.

“What’s next is you guys are staying here to man the phones,” Ryan says as he steps out of the office. “Because Seth and I are heading out to help with the extractions.”

He looks pretty happy about that. I guess that’s because finally he gets to do something other than stare at a computer screen.

“Good luck,” I tell him.

Seth passes us next. “Look after Secret and Dylan while we’re gone.”

“No problem,” E.A. tells him. “I’d better let you guys out if you’re leaving.”

He leads Seth and Ryan out to the entrance hall.

I see Dylan’s got a phone in his hand at one of the folding tables, and he has some of the missing person files in front of him. He must be making calls to check details.

Cassidy is at the water cooler, pouring a cup.

Leanne’s behind Echo’s desk talking to Secret.

It doesn’t look like there’s much to do now but wait.

The phone starts to ring, and I move over to the desk to pick it up.

“Spencer and Shultz …”

“Is Seth Carver still there?” A harassed female voice asks.

“Uh, he just left. Is it something I can help with?”

“Not unless you have medical training,” she says.

“Is this Lana?”

“How did you guess? Look, I don’t have enough staff to deal with this many badly injured people. The doctors and nurses I have are doing their best, but there are twenty Omegas here, three of them are in critical conditions, and we’re stretched too thin to take any more.”

“Okay. Give me a minute,” I ask, putting her on hold.

Leanne and Secret look up at me.

“We seriously need to get more medical staff to Goldcrest, somehow. They don’t have enough to cope with the twenty they already have."

Cassidy takes his phone out of his pocket. “One of the guys in the coalition was a field medic. He might know people they could use.”

“I know someone, but Lana’s probably better friends with her than I am,” Secret says. “Ask if she’s spoken to Brooke. I can call her if she hasn’t.”

I take Lana off hold. “We’re making some calls. Secret asked if you’ve called Brooke.”
