“That was one of the first calls I made,” she admits. “Her guys are coming to help, but we still need like a half dozen more. It’s fucking awful. These women are in really bad shape.”

I glance back at Cassidy. He comes off the phone and nods at me.

“Three field medics are on route. All of them are in the coalition so they’re vetted and they’re safe.”

“We’ve got three field medics on their way to you.”

“Okay. That’s good.” She sounds a little calmer. “We could really just use a few doctors now.”

“We’ll see what we can do.”

“Thanks,” she says, before she hangs up.

“Who else can we call?” I ask.

Cassidy thinks for a second before he nods. “I can put in a call to Cressidan City Hospital. Let them know there’s an emergency situation at the Omega Academy and see if they can spare any of their off duty staff for the night.”

He starts making the call.

I get ready to redial Lana’s number.

We’ve got this whole thing locked down.

I don’t feel anxious. I feel good.

We’ve got this. We’re doing it.

Chapter One Hundred Twelve

Leanne

In less than another hour, the extractions are complete. They went without a hitch, and we’ve managed to send enough medical staff to Goldcrest Academy to cope with the volume and severity of the wounds of all those rescued Omegas and Betas. It was awful to hear that seven of them were critical cases, but all of us are praying for those women.

“It’s time to get the press involved,” E.A. says. “How are you feeling about that?”

“You know, it’s funny. I hated knowing my name was out there linked to Frank Palmer, but this feels completely different.”

“It is completely different,” Secret tells me. “Everyone will see how strong you are in that video with Harlan. And they’ll know you as a hero.”

E.A. smiles. “They will, and it’s true.”

“I’m not the only person sitting here doing this work, E.A.”

“No, but you’re the one who had the guts to risk everything, literally everything, to get that evidence,” he reminds me.

He’s right. I did, and I think everyone’s done with being mad at me for that.

I can tell there’s nothing I can say to downplay it, either.

“Okay,” Secret says. “This is the reporter’s number. She’s local and she’s due to go live at eight so she’ll probably want to speak to you then, on camera.”

“How do you even know a reporter?” I ask.

“My friend Ember from the academy knows this girl whose sister is a reporter. She dates a cop, apparently, but he isn’t one of the bad ones.”

“The bad ones,” I murmur, looking at E.A. “Did we deal with them?”

He nods. “Seth made the calls. They’re all in holding cells right now.”
