I can’t wrap my head around it. I know he doesn’t care much for the average person on the street, but if this woman is actually a fated mate, then he shouldn’t want her to do what he just manipulated her into doing.

“Fate is what it is,” he says. “She was always going to be offered that job, Spencer. She was always going to take it. It’s up to us to make sure she knows what she’s walking into.”

He picks a sealed manilla envelope up from his desk and proffers it to me.

I blink at him. “What’s this?”

“She won’t want to see me, I assume,” E.A. gives me a wry smile. “But you … I doubt she’ll slam the door in your handsome face. You were clearly on her side here.”

“I can’t believe you,” I mutter, snatching the envelope from him.

“There’s something you should know,” E.A. starts, his head cocking slightly before he smiles. “Good. Toshi’s back. I won’t have to repeat myself.”

Echo steps back into the reception area. “Toshi, get over here.”

Our newest pack brother follows Echo into E.A.’s office.

He frowns at E.A. the second he enters. “Why did the woman you had me tail just hit me in the guts with her purse?”

“Presumably because you didn’t do a good enough job of staying invisible,” E.A. tells him.

“She’s going to think we’re a bunch of creepy assholes,” I complain.

E.A. shrugs. “If she does, it must mean she’s attracted to creepy assholes.”

Echo snorts, wiping his smile away when I draw him a warning glance.

“He has a point,” Echo says, shrugging. “But I know she didn’t see me that way, and I think I should be the one to talk to her.”

“What did I miss?” Toshi asks, narrowing his eyes at us.

“You can explain it,” I tell E.A. “I’m taking Echo to speak to her.”

“Wait,” E.A. says. “I should give you all the details. They’re important.”

“All the details about what?” Toshi asks.

“About Leanne Leto,” Echo tells him. “She’s fated to us.”

Toshi’s eyes go wide. “She is? But she’s a Beta.”

“So are you,” Echo reminds him with a smile.

Tension passes between them, and I wonder again about a mating bond with him.

That’s what Echo expected when he felt something the day they met, but so far so platonic.

Either way, it feels like Toshi’s meant to be with us.

I’m not so sure about this woman.

Leanne Leto.

Survivor of a serial killer.

“There’s a reason she got so upset when I mentioned her sister,” E.A. starts. “That’s because the girl who was raised as her sister, is actually her daughter.”

I blink at him. “Wait. What?”
