She is, too.

“How long ago was this, exactly?” Echo asks, frowning at me.

“Fifteen years.”

Everyone’s quiet. Leanne reads through the rest of the pages and passes them back to Echo when she’s done reading.

She looks at me.

“I’m taking the job. This guy needs to be stopped.”

Why did I just know she was going to say that?

Chapter Twenty-Nine

Leanne

This is big, and it’s serious. I don’t like the way Spencer’s partner manipulated me into accepting the job at Anchor West, but Harlan West is a true scumbag, and I want to help these guys get the evidence they need to put him behind bars.

“We can’t let you do this,” Spencer tells me. “You’ll be at risk the second you walk back inside that building. We don’t know where he takes the women. If you go missing … You’ll be on your own. We’ll have no way to find you.”

“There has to be a way,” I tell him. “You can put a tracker on me.”

He doesn’t look happy in the slightest. Echo gives me a ghost of a smile, but it’s clear he’s worried.

I get it. This is a dangerous guy. A psychopath. A killer. An Alpha.

Well, I’ve been hurt by one of those before, and I’m still here.

“This creep has been taking women away from their lives and their families for how long?” I ask.

“At least fifteen years,” Spencer admits.

“And you guys have basically tried everything else you could think of to nail him, and get this evidence, right? I mean, you have tried everything, right?”

“Three times over,” he mutters.

I nod. “And none of that stuff worked.”

“We don’t know that sending you in will work, either.”

“I think it will,” I tell him.

I want to do this. It feels like the first thing I’ve really wanted to do since I got out here.

It would mean something. It would make me feel useful.

“We only have a few days,” I go on. “I’d rather spend those days working on a plan that covers all our bases, than go in there blind and muddle my way through this, but I’m happy to go it alone if I have to.”

“You’re not doing this alone,” Echo tells me.

Spencer sighs. “I don’t like this.”

He doesn’t have to like it.

I know it’s something I need to do.

For the first time in a long time, I feel like I’m starting to take back control of my life.
