She should be running for the door.

“Okay,” she says, nodding. “One shot. What am I looking for? When is he not in his office, and what do I do if I’m still in there when he comes back?”

Talk about heading straight for the no-win scenario.

“If you’re still in there, he’ll know something’s going on and he’ll put you straight to one of his auctions before he calls someone to come and deal with the rest of us. You can’t still be in there when he comes back, and you can’t wait any longer than three days to go up there.”

She blinks at him while I frown.

“Why three days?” she asks.

“Any longer, and he’ll have his review with your boss. He could ask her to send you up to him. That’s probably when he would drug and kidnap you. It would be easy to lie about where you went, and your boss will just think you’re another flaky new start who couldn’t handle the workload.”

“What if he asks to meet me sooner?”

“He won’t,” E.A. asks.

This time, she doesn’t push for an explanation. He knows what he’s talking about when it comes to Harlan West. Seems like everyone in the room understands that.

“So, when should I snoop around his office?” she asks. “Do you have his schedule, or …”

“He’s in all day on Mondays, so you won’t get a chance that day. It would be better if you played the part of enthusiastic new employee then. We don’t want your boss finding anything you do suspicious enough to report to Harlan before their regular Thursday meeting.”

“Okay,” she murmurs, clearly waiting for the rest of his answer.

“If you get an opportunity on the Tuesday after midday, you should take it. Likewise, Wednesday morning before noon. He’s never there Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning. We’ll keep an eye on his movements outside of Anchor West, and let you know when it’s safe. You’ll need to tell us when you’re making your attempt.”

I can’t believe all of this isn’t rattling her nerves.

I don’t think I could do it. Not knowing the stakes.

One false move and we lose everything.

It’s a lot of pressure to put on anyone.

She nods slowly. “I assume we’ll use some kind of code or whatever? And one of you guys will be using a burner phone?”

“You watch a lot of cop shows, don’t you?” E.A. says, laughing lightly.

She flushes a little. “It’s not like there was much else to do in Silver Lake.”

“You’re right,” Spencer tells her, throwing E.A. a sour look that’s not too serious. “He’s just being an asshole.”

“What next?” she asks, clearly ready to shrug it off.

“I don’t know about anyone else, but I, for one, could eat,” I tell them.

“Me too,” Spencer admits.

“Fuck, yes,” Echo says. “All I’ve had all day is tea.”

“You drink tea?” Leanne asks, sounding surprised.

“My mum’s English,” he admits. “I’ve never been across the pond myself, but she gave me her love of tea. I’m not much of a coffee drinker.”

He shrugs and then gets to his feet. “I’ll grab the menus.”

“Sit down, I’m closer,” I tell him, getting up and pushing my chair back enough to get out to the door. It’s a bit of a tight squeeze in here. “Will I clear your desk for when the food comes?”
