“Yeah, it’s bigger and there’s more room out there,” Echo says. “Thanks, Toshi.”

“No problem,” I tell him as I open the door and step out of the office.

Chapter Thirty-Two

Leanne

I only realize how caught up I’ve gotten in this whole thing with Anchor West when I’m passed a menu for the Thai place Echo mentioned before and it clicks that I’m not going to make it to dinner at Secret’s place tonight. I pass the menu onto Spencer, and I open my purse, hoping I don’t have any missed calls on my phone.

“Not a fan of Thai?” Spencer asks.

I glance at him as my fingers close around my cell. “I forgot I had plans. I need to make a call. I’m fine with whatever you guys usually order.”

He nods, passing the menu to Echo. “If you need privacy, my office is unlocked next door.”

“That would be great. Thanks.” I get up and step out of the office.

I could make the call out here, but it would feel weird.

I don’t even know what I’m going to tell Secret about where I am.

I take the few steps to the other door, and when I turn the handle, it opens.

The room is kind of dark, but I’m not going to be in here for long.

I move forward, using the light on my phone to guide me.

Sitting down on the leather chair behind his desk, I bring up Secret’s number and press call.

I’ve barely been in town for two minutes and I’m already cancelling plans with my daughter.

It makes me feel terrible, but if there’s one thing I know, I can’t walk away from this now.

Secret picks up her phone within a few rings.

“Hi Leanne, what’s up? Do you want Ryan to come walk you over?”

“Um, no,” I start. “I’m actually … I got a job, and I’m in training so I’ll have to …”

“Wow. You got something this fast? That’s awesome. What is it?”

“It’s … I’m going to be a private investigator’s assistant.”

“Oh, cool!” she enthuses. “You always loved detective shows. You’ll be great at that.”

“Well, maybe, but it’s all new and I need to kind of absorb myself in the work this weekend. Is it okay if …”

“Trust me, I get it. Take all the time you want. Just, call me, if you need anything, okay? The guys are always here, and we’re so close to where you’re staying. It only takes a second to get to you if you need help with anything.”

I smile at the offer. It’s so sweet and earnest.

“Thanks. I think I’m okay. How was class today? Did you pass any more tests?”

She laughs. “It was fine. No more exams until spring, thank God.”

“Well, have a good night. I’ll give you a call tomorrow.”

“Speak to you soon. Good luck with the training.”
