I nod slowly. “Sure. Thanks. That … sounds great.”

Chapter Four

Leanne

The apartment Secret and her mates live in is small in a cozy kind of way. It’s bigger than mine, and there are more rooms, but I honestly don’t know how all five of them manage to move around this space without constantly getting in each other’s way.

The sweet scent that’s a mixture of Secret and Dylan’s perfumes seems less powerful than the last time I stepped into the apartment, but that’s probably because they were out all day helping me move.

“Dinner’s ready,” Cassidy calls out from the kitchen as we clog up the hallway taking off our shoes.

“It smells amazing,” I admit.

“Cassidy missed his true calling,” Ryan says. “He cooks like a pro.”

Dylan opens the kitchen door and peers out. “I made the carrots.”

“You cut the carrots,” Cassidy corrects him.

“Same difference,” Dylan says.

Seth snorts as we file into the kitchen and take our seats at the table.

“I’m sure the carrots are delicious,” Secret tells him.

She’s not wrong. Everything is perfectly cooked and tastes like something we could only ever have gotten at a fancy restaurant in the city. Ryan’s assessment that Cassidy should have been a chef is spot on.

“So, what do you think?” Secret asks me, already smiling because she knows.

“This might be the best thing I’ve ever eaten,” I admit.

It’s a pork roast with vegetables and potatoes, but everything has distinctive tastes, and it all looks like something that would be served in a place I could probably never afford.

“I’m glad you like it,” Cassidy tells me.

As far as Alphas go, Cassidy’s sweeter than most. He doesn’t have Seth’s overprotective and ready to fight anyone who looks the wrong way at him or his pack kind of vibes. He’s more laid back and thoughtful. I’m glad Secret has Alphas who balance each other out.

I feel a little more relaxed around them after spending the whole day with them.

It might just be because I’m physically tired, but I don’t feel as tense as usual.

Dinner is delicious, and the conversation is light.

Afterwards, though, I’m definitely ready to pass out for the night.

I stifle a yawn as Dylan starts clearing the table.

“I feel like it’s way past my bedtime for some reason,” I admit.

“It’s been a long day,” Secret says. “If you’re ready to go home to your new apartment, Seth will walk you over.”

“Oh, he doesn’t need to,” I start, before he gets to his feet.

“It’s dark out,” he tells me. “You’re not walking home alone.”

“This isn’t Silver Lake,” Ryan reminds me, with a shrug.

“Sorry,” Secret tells me. “There’s no way they’ll let you leave on your own, and I wouldn’t want them to. Ryan’s right. The city has its good points, but it’s not safe to go out alone at night.”
