Considering I wouldn’t want Secret walking home alone at night out here, I guess I can understand why she doesn’t want me doing the same.

“Fine,” I tell them. “Seth can walk me home.”

Chapter Five

Leanne

It feels colder now than it was when we got to the city, and it’s dark enough to see why Secret and her mates insisted on getting Seth to walk me home. Half of the streetlamps are broken out here, and there are more than a couple of pitch-black alleys on our route as we make our way along the sidewalk toward my new home.

Walking alone after dark would be a mistake.

I keep my arms crossed as I walk a little faster to keep up with Seth’s pace.

It’s not hard to see why having an Alpha around could be a good thing.

Everyone we pass gives us a wide berth. No one wants to mess with the big guy.

He shoots a drug addict a warning glance as he starts wandering into our path, and the guy holds up his hands, backing up a little and crossing the street to avoid coming too close to us.

The awkward silence as we walk is thankfully almost over.

I see my apartment building come into view, and I let out a relieved sigh.

“Do you want help with your stuff?” Seth asks once we’re walking toward the doors.

“Stuff?” I ask, not sure what he means.

“We basically dumped all the boxes inside and left them there,” he reminds me. “You’ve still got to put everything away.”

“Oh, right.” I shake my head. “I’ll just take my time with that stuff. It’s not a big deal.”

He puts his hand into his pocket and brings out the key I gave him earlier.

“Well, if you change your mind just call Secret. We can come over and help.”

I take the key from him and smile. “Okay, thanks.”

I expect him to leave, but he doesn’t.

“Secret would be mad if I didn’t walk you to your door,” he admits. “Especially since this place doesn’t have an entry system.”

It doesn’t matter to me, so I just shrug. “Sure. Whatever.”

I walk inside. The hallway is dimly lit. The stairwell seems a bit brighter, and my floor’s landing is brighter again. My apartment is at the end of the hall.

I head toward the door and turn back to Seth once I get there.

“Okay. I’m home. You can get back to your pack now.”

He nods. “See you tomorrow.”

“Bye!” I call, before I open my door and step into the apartment.

The lights are out when I close the door and turn the key in the lock.

I check the peephole and watch Seth leave.

Then, I open my purse and unzip the inner pocket.
