This is so different. It feels like I might have found my tribe.

I never would have guessed my tribe might contain two Alphas.

Considering how nervous I usually feel at the thought of being around dominant men, I’m surprised how easily I’ve managed to relax around Spencer and E.A.

It actually feels like this job could work out.

God, that would be so good.

There’s only one catch.

I need to find a way to pull off the task they’ve been working up to for years.

It sounds close to impossible, and I won’t know if I’m going to succeed until it’s happening.

No pressure, Leanne. There are just countless victims whose families could find justice for what happened to their loved ones if you manage this.

Countless victims whose fates might never be known if you mess this up.

It’s not just a sink or swim situation. It’s more like a drain the pool or drown the world scenario.

People’s lives could be on the line over this, and I’m not talking about these guys right here.

My chest starts to hurt, my throat closing up as I think about the women who were taken, and the men sitting around the desk with me right now.

The truth hits me suddenly, and it hits like an avalanche of bricks.

No matter how this plays out, whether I find the evidence or not, someone’s going to get hurt.

“Hey, are you okay?” Echo asks.

I shake my head slowly, putting down my fork and clasping my hands together to keep them from shaking. “Do you think any of the women Harlan took are still alive?”

He looks surprised, but he takes my hands in his and I instantly feel a little less petrified.

“I don’t know. He’s not a good person, and that’s not on you, Leanne. His actions are his alone.”

The urge to cry begins to fade as he holds my hands in his.

I think he calmed me down before, in my apartment, and he’s doing it again now.

Omegas aren’t supposed to use their healing touch on people they don’t have a close bond with, and he’s used it with me twice now.

“We can’t think about that,” Spencer adds, his voice soft. “We have to focus on who we’re helping.”

“Echo’s using his touch on me,” I murmur, feeling my skin flush when I meet Spencer’s gaze.

“I know,” he says, sounding amused.

“He is?” Toshi asks, a tinge of jealousy in his tone.

“You don’t mind?” I ask Spencer.

“Why would I mind?” he asks me, pressing his lips together, and raising an eyebrow.

“Because I’m a stranger,” I murmur, starting to wonder why I’m questioning it.

“Yeah,” Toshi says. “He shouldn’t be doing that.”
