“That chicken was amazing,” she says as she sits down in Spencer’s seat and shuffles it a little closer to me. “But it was also super salty. Or that might have been the beef. Either way, amazing, and super salty.”

“It’s our favorite place for a reason,” I tell her, shrugging lamely.

It seemed so easy to talk to her in that coffee shop. It felt like we connected without trying.

Now that she noticed me tailing her and realized that was part of it, it’s like we need to start over, and the initial rapport we had is gone. I have no idea how to get it back.

You’re losing your chance, dummy. You’re alone with her.

You can fix this weird awkward tension now.

Get to a place where she looks at you like she looks at Echo, or at least where she’ll give you the occasional smile like she’s been giving Spencer.

“So, uh …” I start, trying to think of something to say or ask that isn’t completely lame.

She touches my arm. “I’m sorry I hit you with my purse. You know that, right? I still feel bad about smacking you like that.” She moves back. “I was pissed off that the first cute guy who gave me his number turned out to be tailing me for a job. Plus, you lied about your name.”

Relief floods through me. “You can hit me again if you want. I know it sucked. I felt bad about it.”

“That’s okay. I’m not mad anymore.”

“You’re really not,” I murmur, not getting it. “If E.A. had pulled something like that on me, I don’t think I would have taken it so well.”

“Oh, I was pretty damn angry at first,” she admits. “I cooled off once Echo came over and I found out why E.A.’s so determined to see Harlan West pay for his crimes. I can’t imagine how awful it must be to know the guy who murdered your mother is still out there walking around.”

“I know, right?” I agree. “It would drive anyone crazy. Not that I’m saying E.A.’s crazy. He’s just kind of … odd, sometimes.”

“I’ve noticed,” she tells me.

She chews on her lower lip before she leans in close.

“Can I ask about the pack’s dynamics?”

“Uh, sure,” I murmur, not as sure as I sound.

Echo already mentioned our Alphas are his mates and my brothers.

Any questions she has are likely to be better directed at him.

“It feels like there’s something between you and Echo. Maybe I’m out of line, but I wouldn’t want to come walking in here stealing everyone’s attention when some of your relationships might still be developing.”

Oh no. She knows.

How can she know when no one else has seen it?

“Are you sure you’re a Beta?” I ask. “Because that feels like an Omega insight.”

“I’m just good at noticing things.”

“Well, no one else around here is.”

“You think Echo doesn’t notice?” she asks, raising an eyebrow at me.

“It does sound stupid when you say it out loud.”

“Do you ever talk to him about it?”

“What, just blurt out that I think we’re supposed to be mates?”
