She shrugs. “If you’ve never said it out loud, and he’s never said it, maybe that’s why you two aren’t together.”

Despite the fact that she’s making a lot of sense, there’s a nagging doubt in my head that’s been there since I met these guys. I’ve felt connected to them from the start, but it’s rare for Betas to be mated to Alphas or Omegas, and it just always felt like a deeper connection would be asking for too much. I might want more, but that doesn’t mean they do.

“I don’t know,” I murmur, as the back door opens and Echo steps back into the room.

He moves toward us. “No sign of your desserts yet?”

“That place is always packed,” I remind him. “They’ll be here soon enough.”

Leanne stands up, and I freak out a little that she might say something on my behalf to Echo.

It’s embarrassing enough that I have feelings for him. It would be worse watching her tell him and seeing him react. It might not be possible to actually die from embarrassment, but if anything could do it, I’m pretty sure that’s it.

“Okay, I need to practice zoning out and walking somewhere, mid-conversation,” she says, looking at Echo. “Come over here and start talking to me.”

“Sure,” he says, smiling at me in passing.

She stands in front of him. “So, how does this fax machine work?”

“Fax machine?” he asks. “No one uses those anymore. I mean, except maybe E.A.”

She rolls her eyes. “It was just the first thing that popped into my head. It’s a simulation of a conversation with a work colleague. Not an actual conversation.”

“Right,” he says, straightening. “Okay, so come with me and I’ll show you how to do this … Woah! What the fuck is that you’re doing with your eyes?”

I can’t see because her back is to me, but Echo looks completely freaked out.

Leanne walks past him slowly for a few steps, turns and stands, staring at the wall.

I get up and Echo moves over to her, waving a hand in front of her face.

She doesn’t react, doesn’t blink.

“Uh, Leanne, are you okay?” I ask.

She stays still until I touch her shoulder, and then she turns to us, blinks and gives us a smile.

“Wow,” she murmurs. “That worked way better than I thought it would.”

“That was disturbing,” Echo admits.

“So, you’re going to use touch as the thing that wakes you up?” I ask, not liking that some random person she works with will be touching any part of her.

“Remember that person might be Harlan,” Echo adds.

“Well, when you say it like that, maybe not. I’ll tell my boss they can call my name until I hear it and snap out of it.” She shrugs.

“Better,” I admit.

“Much,” Echo says.

“So, no practice required?” she asks, smiling.

“I definitely don’t want to see it again,” Echo tells her. “But you could freak Spencer out with it. He might have notes.”

“There’s no way he’ll have notes,” I tell her, shaking my head.
