“She’s lucky you found that file,” I murmur.

“She’s lucky I brought it here. These guys knew what to do. I had no idea.”

“And that’s how we met Toshi,” Spencer says, with a wry smile. “It was an awful case, but it brought him here.”

“Where he was always meant to be,” Echo adds.

I smile at Toshi. “Because he’s fated to be with you, just like I am.”

Echo blinks at me, and I raise my eyebrows at him.

He straightens in his seat, his gaze drifting across to Spencer.

The silence in the room is deafeningly loud.

I wince as Toshi pushes his chair back, ready to leave.

Getting up, I rush after him as he heads for the back door.

“Toshi, wait. Please?”

Chapter Thirty-Nine

Toshi

It feels like everyone’s staring at me, when in fact they’re all looking at each other. I see the flash of horror in Echo’s expression, and my heart sinks. They don’t see me the same way they see Leanne, and they never will.

She’s got something special. She’s strong, and open, as well as incredibly attractive.

When she asks me to wait, a pleading tone in her voice, I can’t make myself leave.

I turn at the door, focusing on her.

Ignoring the fact that things just got awkward with two of the guys I’ve been living with for the last three years.

At least E.A. isn’t here.

I don’t think I could take being rejected by the three of them all at once. They didn’t even have to say anything. It was beyond obvious. They don’t want me like that. They never have.

“Toshi, I’m sorry,” Leanne tells me, sad eyes fixed on mine. “I shouldn’t have …”

She closes her eyes and I raise a hand to stroke her cheek.

“It’s okay. I knew. I just didn’t want to face up to it.”

I can do that now. I’ll have to, if I expect to share Leanne’s time and affections with them.

I’m not wrong about how she feels. She’s made it as clear as she could without outright saying it.

She moves closer, wrapping her arms around my neck and putting her head against mine.

I put my arms around her waist, and I could stand here like this, holding her, all night.

She tilts her head, and her lips brush mine.

I gasp in a breath before I have the sense to lean in more and return her kiss with one of my own.

It might have started as a pity kiss, but the spark I felt between us before is back, and it doesn’t take long to realize she kissed me first, before she kissed Echo, or Spencer, or E.A.
