If they needed us, we would be there.

I silently said goodbye to our one night—if it even counted as a full night—of peace, and we made our way outside to Alek’s bike.

“Hello, son.”

We halted as we walked down the stairs of Night Raven, turning the corner to find Marcus.

Alek immediately stiffened, pushing me behind him as if to hide me from his father. “What the hell do you want?” he demanded.

Natalie, Wrath, and my father stood behind him, everyone tense. Everyone ready.

“Don’t worry,” Marcus said with an arrogant smile. It still shocked me how similar he and Alek looked, but Alek was nothing like that monster. “I’m not here to send you beyond the veil again.”

“Kill me, you mean,” Alek corrected sourly. “You killed me.”

Marcus didn’t even flinch. He stood, face blank, and stared back at his son. “I apologize for what had to be done, but we got your brother back. It was necessary in the greater plan.”

My father muttered something under his breath, and Wrath rolled his eyes.

“What are you doing here?” Alek asked again, jaw taut.

Marcus turned and shot a glance at Natalie. “Does she need to be here listening to every word we say?”

Natalie crossed her arms.

“Yes,” Wrath answered. “She’s Lyra’s friend and is welcome here. Start talking.”

Wrath wasn’t nearly as sharp as Alek, but he was still terrifying. Still powerful and demanding of respect in a way that couldn’t be denied.

Marcus returned his gaze to Alek as he said, “Something has happened with the veil.”

“Really?” Alek hissed. “You mean other than you forcing Lyra to open it?”

Marcus’s jaw tightened. He wasn’t used to Alek standing up to him this way. He wasn’t used to anyone standing up to him.

We hadn’t seen Marcus since that night, since the ceremony that both killed Alek and brought him and Wrath back to this realm.

Part of me couldn’t fathom the amount of cruelty a father must possess to kill his own son.

The other part of me understood it clearly.

Had lived it, even.

Theia would have done the same, I was sure of it.

“I came here to tell you that something has shifted in the balance of things. Opening the veil has caused a disturbance”.

“Great,” Alek scoffed, throwing his hands up. “We hadn’t noticed.”

My father stepped forward. “We don’t need your help, Marcus. We’ll take care of it.”

“You will?” Marcus lifted his chin for the first time since we arrived. “Because the way I see it, you need my help to finish closing the veil.”

“We don’t,” Wrath interrupted, standing taller. “You should have stayed away, Father. It’s up to us to handle things now.”

Marcus’s fists clenched. The air in the room stilled, but I was the only one to notice. “You have no idea the damage that can be caused,” he seethed.

Wrath stared back. “I was on the other side of the veil for years. I’ve seen more than you think.”
