I sucked in a sharp breath as he continued to do just that. He devoured me, ravished me, working his tongue against me in ways that had me unraveling in his arms.

This time, when I reached down for him, he didn’t stop me. He let me pull off his shirt, unbuckle his jeans, and finally guide his body back up to mine.

“Every second of my life that isn’t spent like this is torture,” he said, kissing me. “I am in hell when I’m not with you.”

I wrapped my legs around him as he pushed inside my entrance. Any words in my mind disappeared entirely as that first wave of pleasure rolled through me.

I gasped, but Alek’s mouth was on mine, capturing my moans of ecstasy with his own.

His body moved with mine in perfect waves of bliss. Time disappeared. I wrapped my arms around him, our breath blending together as we got lost in this moment.

He was right. I was going to remember every perfect second of this.

A few moments later, Alek pulled me into his arms as we both caught our breath.

“Do you regret it?” I asked.

“Regret what?”

“Meeting me in Night Raven. Starting this fake-dating deal with me. Any of it, I guess.”

He smiled and leaned down, placing a gentle kiss on my forehead. “Not for the entire world, Lyra Sol.”

And in a way that made my soul ache, I believed him.

I truly, wholly believed him.

CHAPTER 3

Lyra

The absolute bliss of waking up in Alek’s arms did not last nearly long enough. I had barely blinked my eyes open when my phone began to buzz nonstop on the small wooden nightstand beside the warm, cozy bed.

“No,” Alek mumbled, pulling me tighter into his arms. “Whatever it is, it can wait.”

I smiled, but fought against his grasp, anyway. Normally, I would have believed him. I would have ignored whoever was trying to get ahold of me—especially now that my mother was out of the picture.

But now? The sinking feeling in my stomach told me to check my phone.

I picked it up in time to see a stream of text messages and calls from Natalie.

Get here now. Something you need to see.

“What is it?” Alek groaned groggily.

I sat up in bed. “It’s Natalie. Something’s happened, and we need to go back.”

He huffed and rolled onto his back, sinking deeper into the perfectly warm bed. “Why can’t we leave this mess behind and escape into the large abyss of this world? Paris, maybe. They wouldn’t find us there.”

I slapped his bare chest lightly. “Because our friends and family need us, remember?”

He smiled, just beginning to open his eyes.

Our friends. Our family.

I wasn’t sure when, but sometime over the last few weeks, they had become my family. Alek’s legion—most of his legion, anyway—had grown on me. They were now the only family I had, the only friends I had.

Alek groaned again, but sat up and pulled on his shirt. He had a responsibility to these people, to his brother.
