Run. Hide. Fight. Something.

I glanced around anxiously. There were five more figures, all wearing black, with ski masks covering their features. By the looks of it, they were strong. Hell, it didn’t take much to outmatch me.

And they had guns.

It’s not like I really had a choice.

Still, I stood with my chin lifted and my fists tightened. A million thoughts raced through my mind.

“Friends of your boyfriend.” The way he said friends and boyfriend forced me to believe he was certainly not a friend.

I swallowed over the lump in my throat. “Is that why you have a gun to my head?”

He lowered the gun and shoved me forward, gripping my upper arm with so much force, I bit my cheek to keep from crying out.

“You’re coming with us, princess.” The man’s voice was rough and groveled; not a single ounce of empathy or kindness laced his words.

The next few seconds blurred together. I was dragged away from the house before I could even consider fighting back. Tape was thrown over my mouth, muffling any cries to Wrath or Natalie, and I was shoved into the back of a black van that waited just inside the gates of the property.

Shit.

This was bad. This was really, really bad.

My chest nearly exploded as I sat there, breathing heavily through my nose as my wrists were tied behind my back.

No. This wasn’t happening to me. Not again.

Not now, not after everything I fought so hard to escape from.

I struggled fervently against the ties on my wrist, instinctually trying to get free.

This wasn’t Theia, I reminded myself. No matter how hard things have gone, no matter what they did to me, at least I wasn’t back there with her.

Maybe Alek was meeting me somewhere. Maybe these were Night Ravens I hadn’t met yet, simply doing their job for Alek.

It made sense, right? Alek had been gone all night, so surely, he had something to do with this.

“Keep fighting and I’ll slice those pretty hands from your body.”

Okay, definitely not working with Alek.

I shrieked my protests into the tape across my mouth, but it was no use. Three masked figures sat across from me as the van lurched forward, pulling away from the house.

Pulling away from the only people who would protect me.

And dragging me away into the night.

CHAPTER 8

Lyra

Demons used to terrify me.

I wasn’t afraid to admit that, either.

The stories Theia told me of the reckless, sadistic creatures that killed and summoned evil spirits and didn’t care who they hurt in the process were enough to give me nightmares.

They were the biggest enemy to the goddesses, formed from impure energy as an anomaly in the universe.
