Yes, I was afraid of them.

But that was before. That was before I met Alek, before I got to know him. After spending time with the Night Ravens, I learned they were not these impure anomalies at all. No, they were just like us, with flaws and fears and weaknesses.

The difference? Demons didn’t lie to themselves like the goddesses did. They knew they were impure; they knew they held darkness within them, and they did not try to fight it.

No, I did not fear them anymore. Now, I related to them deeply.

Maybe that was only because I was half a demon.

Either way, I was not drowning in fear as I thought I would be when the masked men pulled me out of the van and led me to an abandoned building. We had driven for hours, two at least, before finally screeching to a halt.

Nobody said a word the entire time, save for a few threats on my life whenever I made any movement in the back of the van. It was touching, really.

It didn’t take long for me to discover they were demons. First, it would take an idiot to raid Alek’s house. No human would ever be so naïve.

Second, they were stronger than humans. Much larger, too.

And then there were the eyes. They were the only thing I could see beneath the all-black clothing and masks, but it was enough.

The demons’ eyes didn’t lie.

The grip on my arm didn’t loosen as I was dragged into the half-rotted building and tossed into a room with one blanket on the floor and broken glass littering the corners.

The demon escorting me cut the ties from my raw hands and ripped the tape from my mouth before spinning me around roughly. Pain seared through my skin from the duct-tape, my lower face now raw.

“I’m only going to ask you this once, so I want you to think very carefully before answering. Where is Alekzander Black?”

Fuck. That was the question, wasn’t it? Where was he? Why wasn’t he home when these imbeciles kidnapped me? Did Wrath know I was missing yet? Did Nat? Was Alek searching for me yet, following the tracks of the van to this very creepy, cold building?

Or was I utterly, insurmountably alone?

The good news was that I couldn’t possibly lie to this demon. He wanted an answer I truly could not give him, and that alone gave me some peace.

I looked into his eyes as I answered truthfully, “I don’t know.”

I should have been prepared for the backhand across my face, stinging down my neck and forcing tears to my eyes, but I wasn’t.

The sound of it echoed off the empty, cracked walls of the dilapidated room.

The taste of blood came next, bitter and sharp against my tongue.

The demon released me, turning back toward the hallway. “He’ll come for you,” he said with resolve. “And when he does, we’ll be here.”

What. The. Hell.

He shut the dirty wooden door behind him, leaving me alone in the room.

I didn’t have to try the doorknob to know it was locked.

Once again, I was trapped.

I walked over to the only small window present. The glass was broken, but someone had nailed a wooden board across the width, preventing anyone from escaping. Peering through the cracks, I saw at least two demons pacing in the grass outside.

This was a trap.

They took me in hopes that they would get to Alek.

The entire thing was fucking comical.
