I had no idea where Alek was, and Alek would have absolutely no clue where to find me. I left no trace. Even Wrath and Natalie would still be sleeping in their warm, cozy beds.

My breath began to thin. I lost focus second after second. No, this couldn’t be happening to me. After everything? After my freedom?

I was being used as a fucking pawn once again.

Only this time, it had nothing to do with my blood. It had to do with my relationship. Seriously?

What the hell did they want from Alek, anyway? Wrath was in charge now. I could see them wanting to challenge him, of course. Alek had told me about the rival demons in the area, everyone fighting for power every time a new king was brought to the throne.

But this was different.

This felt personal.

“He has no idea I’m here!” I yelled to nobody. “He’s never going to come for me!”

Laughter in the distance sent chills down my back.

They didn’t give a shit if he came for me. They wanted him to panic; I was sure. Otherwise, they would have gone and found Alek themselves.

Why risk it? Had they been waiting for me outside the house? Or were they planning on finding Alek and decided to settle for me instead?

No, no, no. I couldn’t think that way.

Panicking wouldn’t help.

Panicking wasn’t going to get me out of this situation.

Taking a deep breath, I walked to the far corner of the room and slid down the wall, pressing my back against the cold surface and trying to clear my thoughts. Alek had no idea I was here. I was taken in the middle of the night by demons, clearly not Night Ravens.

Unless….

No, I would have recognized the voice, wouldn’t I?

I supposed I didn’t know every demon in Night Raven. I had seen most at the balls and the blood bonding, but…

Focus, Lyra.

I couldn’t control the fact that I had been taken. I couldn’t control the fact that I had no idea who those demons were or what they wanted from Alek.

But I could control myself.

I had spent way too much time sitting around, waiting to be saved.

Not anymore.

I scanned the room, looking for anything that might help me. Aside from the broken glass and a few spare nails littering the disgusting ground, I had nothing.

The door was locked and the window was covered. Surely the demons would be lining the perimeter, waiting for Alek with claws and teeth bared.

My stomach sank.

Even if Alek did discover where I was, even if he came straight here looking for me in the next hour, they would be waiting for him.

What if they hurt him? What if they tortured him for information on the Night Ravens? What if they…

The sound of talking pulled me from my thoughts. A few male voices rumbled through the walls.

I shot to my feet and scrambled to the door, pressing my ear against the cold surface to listen for anything I could make out, anything that might help me.
