Alek’s hands on my body froze.

Wrath’s gaze snapped between us and Narcissa, everyone waiting for her next words.

“I’ve known for some time, but I needed to be sure,” she said, staring directly at Alek.

Alek stiffened even further, pulling away from me.

“Alek?” I asked. “What is she talking about?”

“Someone better tell me what the hell is going on right now,” Wrath ordered. His words were powerful, but I sensed the tiniest amount of fear lacing them.

Time froze. The air around us stilled.

Narcissa lifted her chin before answering, “The boy is bound to the darkness. If we do not help him, he will die.”

Chaos erupted between the three of us.

“What the hell are you talking about?” I demanded.

“The boy knows what I speak of.”

I jumped to my feet, spinning to face Alek as he did the same.

The moment I saw his face, I knew something wasn’t right. Alek stared at Narcissa with an anger I had only seen on him a handful of times. Wrath stepped forward, the two of us pleading with Alek for answers.

“I have no idea,” Alek said, his jaw flexing before he finally turned and looked at us. “I’m fine.”

“You’re far from fine, boy,” Narcissa added.

“What’s wrong with him?” Wrath asked, a crease forming between his brows.

“I can only assume that you are craving a darkness you shouldn’t be. That the veil has affected you and you’re struggling to cope with your new reality.”

“Enough!” Alek yelled, cutting her off.

I flinched.

Wrath stilled.

“Alek,” I whispered.

“I said I’m fine!” he insisted.

Anger, denial, hurt. I wasn’t sure exactly what Alek was feeling right now, only that it was bad. It was really, really bad.

My chest tightened. Everything in me screamed to help him.

How had I not seen it? The irritability, the intensity, the mood swings. Alek wasn’t himself. He hadn’t been himself for weeks.

“Is this because he crossed the veil?” Wrath asked. Both of us completely ignored the demands that he was fine. “Because I crossed the veil, too, and I haven’t felt any symptoms.”

“The veil is only partially the cause.” Narcissa stepped toward Alek again.

I could see his muscles flexing, ready to bolt at any moment. He was so different from the Alek I had seen just a few moments ago, holding me with worry and care and love. Now, he was defensive. Tense.

“You drank her blood,” Narcissa said. It was not a question.

Alek swallowed.
