Heat rushed to my face.

“Lyra’s blood opens the veil. You drank it; it runs in you. The dark forces from the other side are weighing on you, boy. They are pulling you under, using Lyra’s blood as a beacon within you.”

“How is that possible?” I asked.

Alek took a half-step backward, away from all of us.

“If it’s my blood, wouldn’t it be affecting me, too?”

“You did not die and visit the veil, child. This one did.”

Alek tensed, refusing to look at me. Refusing to look at anyone now, actually.

“Is this true?” Wrath asked his brother. “Have you been feeling these things? Craving darkness?”

Alek took another step back. “I don’t need this.”

Wrath’s face twisted in sympathy. “Brother—”

“I told you all I’m fine! I don’t know why you’re all pretending like I’m the problem here. I’m not, so leave me alone!”

Alek turned and bolted into the darkness, into the forest.

Leaving us alone, gaping after him.

CHAPTER 13

Alek

How fucking dare they.

After everything I went through? After everything I did for them?

I was not the one with the problem! I don’t know why Narcissa felt the need to attack me, but I was not the one who needed help.

I was totally fine.

I kept running—away from the veil, away from Wrath and his kingly responsibilities, away from Narcissa, away from her.

Hell, the way Lyra looked at me?

My legs pumped beneath me, tearing me away from whatever just happened, from the agony I felt in my chest, deep and unmoving.

They didn’t see me.

They looked at me like I was the problem here, like I was the thing that needed fixing.

I needed no fixing.

I ran and ran and ran, jumping over the fallen logs in the forest and ripping through the sticks and foliage until I was sure they had torn through my jacket, had torn away at the skin on my arms.

They had no clue what slept within me, the darkness that had been begging to come out.

Had it gotten worse since I came back through the veil? Sure. But was it because I drank Lyra’s blood?

Who the fuck knows?

All I knew was that I couldn't stand there for another second with them looking at me like that, with them judging me and with Lyra’s hand covered in that divine liquid.
