I replayed it in my mind over and over again. My legs burned from running, but I didn’t stop.

If I stopped, my thoughts would take over.

The darkness that threatened the edges of my mind would finally crawl out from the corners, drowning me in it.

And I couldn’t afford that. Not with so much happening.

I must have been running for over an hour, because the trees finally dwindled, turning into spread-out foliage that no longer threatened to pull me under.

The darkness above morphed, stained by the city lights ahead.

But I kept moving.

Something inside of me wanted to turn back, wanted me to return to her. Of course, I couldn’t do that. I had wanted her blood so fucking badly, even smelling it from afar had nearly ripped me apart tonight.

It took every ounce of strength in my body to keep moving forward.

I stumbled out of the forest, onto the narrow road that eventually led to a busier street downtown.

I pulled my jacket tightly around my torso, shoving my hands in my pockets and lowering my chin before I fell into line on the street.

I knew where I was headed.

It was the same place I had been sneaking off to for nights now.

The only place that felt safe for me.

The music pulled me in the direction of the club. It was different from Night Raven, not as hidden or elite. This club was easy for anyone to get into.

It was sloppy, and if I was being honest, it was below me.

But that was the point.

Nobody I knew would be lurking in this part of town. Nobody would recognize me.

Here, I was just another face. Just another body looking to drown my sorrows and forget about my reality for the night.

The line in front of the club was long, wrapping around the street. That was fine. I never went inside, anyway.

While the rest of the people on the street around me continued straight, I ducked sideways, slipping down the long alley on the side of the building.

Most people wouldn’t be able to see in the darkness of the alley. There were no streetlights out here. Nothing to illuminate the back of the building.

Nobody to see the demon that lurked in the shadows.

I made my way to the back of the club, where the door sat beside a large dumpster.

Nobody wandered out here. Nobody sober, anyway. It would only take a few minutes for someone to stumble out that back door, looking for a quick getaway or a place to vomit.

Those were not my targets, the ones too drunk to know what had happened. No, I waited for the bastards that typically accompanied those innocent women.

It wasn’t the innocent ones I was after. They didn’t deserve this.

But many of the men following them did.

I pushed my back against the dirty brick, slowing my racing heart.

Lyra didn’t know.
