“I’m trouble for her, I’m—”

“You are hers! You heart bonded, you wielded her damn magic! You are hers just as she is yours, and you’re leaving her. You’re leaving your bonded.”

The words punched me like a fucking knife in the gut. That was it. The truth.

The words I had been avoiding ever since we shared blood in that fucking ballroom.

It was a mistake. It was all a big fucking mistake.

I never should have bitten her. I never should have let her bite me.

The story of the heart bonded was one I had been denying for too long, trying to piece together another way that someone so angelic, so beautiful, could be bonded by fate to a blood-hungry monster like me.

It was a sick, twisted form of punishment, one I was going to keep from Lyra for as long as I could.

Wrath was one of the few people who knew about the heart bonded. Wrath and Marcus, both of whom were willing to keep their mouth shut about it so the Night Ravens would refrain from biting anyone they might be sleeping with at the time.

To accept a bite from a demon was one thing.

To drink from each other for pleasure…

I pushed myself from my seat and took a few steps toward the door before turning and looking at my brother. My pure, golden brother, the king of demons and leader of the Night Ravens.

I was glad it was him. I would have torn the entire place to pieces, and I would have everyone burning with me.

Wrath was good. He did what was right, no questions asked. That look on his face…

Hell. He could not even fathom why someone like me would be so unsavable.

“I need some space,” I whispered, swallowing over the lump in my throat. “I’ll come back when I’m ready.”

With that, I left the kitchen, not stopping in the hallway, not stopping near the staircase, and walked all the way out of that front door.

The door to my home.

Leaving everyone, Lyra included, behind.

CHAPTER 16

Lyra

“He said that to you?” I set my coffee down and repeated Wrath’s words in my mind, trying to piece together whatever the hell he was just trying to say to me. “Alek told you he was leaving?”

Wrath nodded, but refused to meet my eyes. Natalie was immediately at my side, wrapping a comforting arm around my shoulder.

“I’m sorry, Lyra,” Wrath added with a grimace. “I tried to stop him.”

“Where did he go?” My voice cracked, partly from exhaustion and partly from utter fucking surprise. We only just got him back. After last night, after everything…

How could he just disappear again? It wasn’t right. It wasn’t him.

“I have a few guesses,” Wrath said, “but nowhere that you would want to go to. He just needs time, Lyra.”

“Fuck time!” Natalie interrupted with a sneer, shaking her head. “This is bullshit. He’s been a completely different person lately.”

Wrath and I shared a knowing look.

Yes, he had been. It was beginning to scare the shit out of me.
