A new wave of emotions threatened to break through, but I quickly shoved them down. I was no longer going to cry over Alek’s incomprehensible behavior. He played me last night, getting what he wanted before slipping out in the night like I was just… just…

“Are you okay?” Natalie asked quietly. If she wasn’t here, I probably would have lost my mind ages ago.

I didn’t have to respond, didn’t have the energy to lie to her.

No, I wasn’t fucking okay. But how could I admit that?

“There’s an event at the lake house tonight,” Wrath added. “He might be there.”

Natalie’s head snapped in his direction. “Is that an official invite as fellow Night Ravens?”

“First of all, you’re not demons. Please, for all our sakes, do not forget that. But if you’d like to come…” His eyes softened as he looked at her. “I wouldn’t stop you.”

Natalie squealed, removing her arm from my shoulders and jumping up and down, clapping her hands in a way that reminded me so much of life before all of this.

I was miserable living under Theia’s grasp, yes, but those few moments of peace I had with Natalie? They were my everything.

“Yay!” Natalie cheered. “What type of event is this? Nothing too creepy and dark, right?”

Wrath rolled his eyes, though a smile played on his lips.

“Kidding!” Natalie held her hands up in surrender. “You demons would never do anything weird.”

She shot me a sideways glance.

“This is a peacemaking event we do with the surrounding demon packs in the area,” Wrath explained.

I sat up straighter. “And you think it’s a good idea for us to be attending this? I don’t exactly have a great track record with your demon buddies.”

Wrath sighed. “There’s nothing to worry about. Only friends of ours will show up. Anyone who has a problem with us tends to stay away. It’s how we know who is friend and who is foe around here.”

His words made perfect sense, but the sinking feeling in my stomach refused to abate.

“Besides,” Wrath added, “it might be good for everyone to see two descendants of goddesses mingling with the demons. It wasn’t too long ago that gods and demons went to war.”

Natalie held up a hand. “Please,” she scoffed. “If there will be free drinks, count us in. Lyra could use something to take her mind off Alek.”

I squinted at her. “Do you really think showing up at his lake house is going to help take my mind off things?”

“It’s better than sitting around here for days on end.” Natalie shrugged. She slid her hands down to my wrists and began pulling me out of the kitchen. “Come on! We have things to do today! We’re partying with demons tonight!”

“I still can’t believe it,” I mumbled as Natalie fluffed her shining hair in the mirror. “He left without saying a word? After everything? After the veil?”

Her hands froze. She immediately stopped what she was doing and spun around in the regal chair that faced the vanity. “You can talk to me about it, you know,” she said. “About what happened with the veil.”

I sighed. “I know, and I appreciate that.”

Her brows drew together. “You’ve gone through so much, Ly. You’ve seen shit that nobody should have to see in their entire lives. Whatever happened last night with the witch and the brothers…”

“What did Wrath say?” I asked, trying to keep my voice light. “Did he tell you anything?”

She exhaled and turned back around, glancing at me through the mirror as she returned to fixing her hair. “Not much. He’s very loyal, very secretive.”

“That makes sense, considering he’s now the king of demons.”

She flushed, tossing her hairbrush onto the vanity and throwing her head back while she fully relaxed in the chair. “king of demons,” she mused. “Can you fucking believe it?”

“Believe how absolutely in love with him you are?” I smiled; I couldn’t help it. Natalie wasn’t the type to fall in love. She loved many things, sure. She loved music and movies and coffee with one too many shots of espresso. She loved dancing and kissing, and she didn’t care who or where—she just loved it.
