But to be in love? To allow someone to see you, and for you to see them fully, and love them anyway? To allow someone that soft, perfect part of you and to say here, have it, I’m yours?

Natalie wasn’t the type for that.

But I could see it in her eyes now, how absolutely ruined she was when it came to Wrath.

I knew the feeling very well.

“Love,” she repeated, biting her lip. “It’s such a strong word. We haven’t known each other long at all.”

“Long enough to know that you don’t want to go a day without him,” I explained with a grin. “That’s something.”

She turned in her chair again, half-hanging over the side as she met my eyes. “Who knew that you would be the one teaching me about love?” she whispered, then grimaced. “Yeah, this is going to hurt like a bitch.”

We both laughed then, laughing in joy and pain and fear. Yes, it was going to hurt like a bitch. It already did.

My mind went right back to him, back to the way he touched me last night, the way his mouth moved against mine. How? How could he let me crumble at his fingertips while he planned to leave the second my eyelids fluttered closed?

How could he leave me so easily, when being away from him for even a minute brought me to my knees?

“Enough about them,” Natalie decided. “Tonight is about us. And I finally get to see this infamous lake house you almost died at.”

I snorted. “That feels like a lifetime ago.”

“No drowning this time, Lyra. And no drama, either. Alek probably won’t even show up; he has to know Wrath wouldn’t let us out of his sight for an entire night.”

“You’re probably right.”

“Of course I’m right. Now, come help me with this necklace.”

CHAPTER 17

Alek

Lyra’s father walked in with eyes that made me think he was about to kill me.

Hell, I wouldn’t blame him if he did.

I sat at the bar of Night Raven with my back facing the wall, able to see all of my surroundings: the busy dance floor, the line of people waiting to get in.

But all of that disappeared as I narrowed in on him.

“Thank you for meeting me,” I said as he pulled out the bar stool beside me.

“Yeah, well, where Lyra’s concerned, I’m not sure I have a choice.”

I shrugged. I knew the feeling. I would tear the fucking world apart to find her, to make sure she was okay. That was love.

“We have a problem,” I started. Asmond’s eyes glued on me, sharp and green. I remembered those eyes. I saw them in my nightmares more nights than not.

“What’s the problem?” He reached for a glass of whiskey that was just placed in front of him by the bartender.

“Theia went to see Lyra just before she tried to have me killed.”

He choked on his drink before quickly regaining composure. “What did you just say?”

I shrugged. “You heard me.”

A silent blanket fell over us. Asmond was a smart demon; I had known that for years. He was smart enough to avoid Theia altogether, even if that meant leaving Lyra in the hands of that monster for over two decades.
