“I don’t know. I just have a feeling.”

Alek stepped closer, following my eyes as I glanced around us. He rolled his shoulders back, his fists tightened at his sides.

“Yeah,” he whispered, his breath tickling my cheek. “I have the same feeling. Follow me.”

He took two steps back toward the living room, but I stopped him. “Where are you going?”

“Something isn’t right here. I’d rather find out what it is now rather than wait for all hell to break loose. Are you coming with me?” He raised a brow.

I hesitated, my forehead creasing with concern. I was still so mad at him. I didn’t need his attention; I didn’t need his protection.

But I also wanted to know what the hell was going on.

I took his outstretched hand and followed him through the lake house.

Natalie remained twirling in the center of the living room, now surrounded by Salem and her friends, along with a few other demons I recognized from Night Raven.

Alek pulled me into the kitchen, where Wrath and a few others continued to drink and watch the dancing from afar. “Hey,” Alek said as we approached. “Notice anything strange here?”

Wrath shrugged. “No, why do you ask?”

Alek stiffened. “No reason. Let me know if you see anything weird, okay?”

Wrath nodded. “You got it, brother.”

And then we were moving. Alek led me outside, pulling me out the front door of the lake house and away from the light.

“Alek, stop! I can’t leave Natalie there.”

“Trust me,” he replied. “She’s much safer in there with all of those Night Ravens around her.”

“And me?” I asked. “You’d rather pull me out here to the danger instead of staying inside?”

He stopped walking and spun to face me so quickly that I smacked into his chest. His hands were on me immediately, stopping me from falling on my ass.

“You’re always safe with me, Lyra. Always.” Even in the darkness, I could see the electricity behind his neon-green eyes, the intensity. He meant those words. Well, he wanted to mean those words.

But were they really true? I couldn’t keep up with him these days. If I was always so safe with him, why was he always disappearing? Why was he staying away from me?

My head spun. “Alek, I—”

He leaned down, his mouth coming only inches from mine, but his eyes locked on something behind me. I froze.

“Stay still,” he breathed. “Someone’s watching us.”

Every ounce of my blood froze in my veins.

“Act normal,” he whispered, his lips brushing my jaw.

Normal. None of this was anywhere close to normal. Still, I leaned into Alek’s warm body, sliding my hands around his waist as we pretended to act like a normal couple.

Alek did the same, his mouth finding the sensitive spot under my ear.

He was distracted, yes. It was just a show; I knew that. But the way my body reacted to his was never a show. It wasn’t when we were only fake-dating, and it sure as hell wasn’t now. I craned my neck to the side, all but forgetting about the stranger watching us.

Alek’s hand slipped up my waist, pulling my chest to his as his lips traced the length of my neck. I shuddered against his touch.

“Is he still watching?” I breathed into his ear.
