Alek didn’t answer. Instead, he pulled me even tighter against him, flush until there was not a single inch between us. He slid his mouth back up my neck, nipping at my jaw lightly before I finally pulled his mouth to mine.

I didn’t hold back. Whoever watched us would surely believe we were out here to do only this—to succumb to one another’s embrace and hold tightly as if we could hide out here away from the rest of the world.

I kissed Alek roughly, needily. Our teeth clashed, and our mouths blended in a fierce show of lust, of desire.

Alek was the first to pull back, his breathing not nearly as affected as mine. “He left,” he whispered.

It took me a few seconds to gain composure. “Good.”

We stayed there in each other’s arms, neither of us backing out of the embrace. Alek’s green eyes flickered across my face, landing back on my lips with such heat that I thought he would give in and kiss me once more.

But he didn’t.

“Let’s go,” he said, pulling back and slipping his hand back into mine. “We’re following him.”

I didn’t argue. Alek pulled me around the edge of the house, where no light could reach. His fully demon eyes had no issue seeing. That was swiftly becoming a trait I wished my half-demon heritage possessed.

Still, I clung to him. The eerie feeling in my body only intensified as we crept around the house, our backs on the brick of the building as Alek leaned forward and peered around the corner.

I held my breath, frozen.

Alek’s hand chilled in mine. “What the fuck—”

I turned in time to see a masked man swinging toward my head.

And everything went black.

CHAPTER 21

Alek

It took five of those idiots to restrain me, and I only managed to knock a few of them out before they could twist my arms behind my back, forcing me into the woods.

“Lyra!” I yelled out, thrashing against the bodies holding me.

I heard nothing. One of those sons of bitches struck her; I felt her slip from my grasp as soon as we were ambushed.

Fear clouded my senses. She wasn’t dead. If they wanted her dead, there were easier ways.

“Grab her,” one of the masked figures ordered from behind me.

I twisted around to see one of them throwing her small figure over their shoulder before tromping into the woods after us.

Away from the lake house. Away from Wrath and the others ignorantly dancing and drinking the night away.

Fuck. I should have known a night like this would be a bad idea.

And who the hell were these people?

“What do you want?” I shouted. One of the men holding my arm back twisted even harder, shoving me forward. “You’ll all die for this. I hope you know that. If you hurt her, this entire fucking world will burn.”

“Shut up,” one of them sneered. I had heard that voice before. Even though their faces were covered, I recognized them from somewhere.

These were not strangers. This was not a random attack.

I thrashed again, fighting to get loose from the people holding me back.

Until I heard a gun cock.
