But Narcissa didn’t stop there. “Do you crave my blood right now?” she asked.

I shook my head. “No, just Lyra’s.”

“Hmmm.” Narcissa stood, brushing her hands down her skirt as she approached Lyra. “Give me your hand, child.”

I watched from the corner of my eye as Narcissa knelt in front of Lyra. Lyra didn’t hesitate. She gave the witch her hand.

“Do you trust me?” she asked Lyra.

“No,” she answered quickly. “You knew Alek was hurting the last time you saw us. You told me the veil was up the last time we tried to close it. You’ve been keeping secrets. Why would I trust you?”

I tensed too, ready to end the witch’s life if she so much as tightened her grip on Lyra’s hand.

But Narcissa only stared at Lyra a second longer before she burst into a fit of laughter.

“Smart, smart child,” she beamed between laughs. “You shouldn’t trust me. But tell me, do you trust him?” She cocked her head.

Both sets of eyes turned to me.

I didn’t expect lyra to trust me. Fuck no. not after everything. Not after I betrayed her, lied to her, snuck around behind her back.

Not with this hunger.

But Lyra did not cower as she looked at me. “Yes, I trust him.”

The witch smiled. “Good. What we’re about to do will require a lot of trust.”

“What?” I interrupted, glancing between them. “What are we doing?”

Narcissa pulled a small knife from her waist, just bigger than the palm of my hand. “We’re going to make you drink.”

CHAPTER 26

Lyra

Iyanked my hand away before she could touch me with her blade. “Have you lost your mind?” I hissed. “You’re going to cut me right here?”

Alek pushed himself up from the couch and took three large strides to the kitchen, getting as far away from us as possible as he ran his hands through his messy, black hair. “I knew this was a waste of time,” he snapped.

“A waste?” Narcissa challenged, raising her chin. “You think I am playing with you, boy? Her blood is your weakness. Whatever happened to you on the other side of the veil is linked to her. You wanted my help. That is what you came here for. Let me help you before you ruin this for us all.”

“How is this going to help?” I pushed, gesturing to Alek. “Look at him! He can barely be in the same room as me right now!”

Hurt flashed across Alek’s features from the other side of the cabin. I saw it before he fixed his features, furrowing his brows.

“You said you trust him,” Narcissa hedged. “Show him how much you trust him.”

I sputtered in disbelief, “By testing him? By pushing him to his limit of self-control?”

Narcissa turned both shoulders to me, her eyes peering into mine as she said, “That boy craves your blood. Not mine. Not anyone else’s. Yours. There is something in him that requires what your blood has to offer, child. You have the blood of the goddess. Let’s see what he can really do when he has a taste.”

Hell. Her words made sense, and I fucking hated that they did. Alek craved my blood, and it was more than lust. More than a fiery passion and a carnal instinct.

This was something deeper.

“Fine,” I said, holding my hand out to the witch. “Let’s get it over with, then.”

Alek shook his head. “No,” he barked. “I’m not doing that.”
