But Narcissa was already pressing that small blade to my palm, pushing just hard enough that a red line appeared on my pale skin.

“If you want my help, you are. I won’t let you kill her,” the witch swore.

Alek stilled, his shoulders rising and falling. “I can’t.”

“It’s okay,” I said. “Narcissa is right. You crave my blood for a reason. It makes you stronger, Alek. My goddess magic bleeds into you. Let’s just try it.”

I begged him to believe me, to trust me. I was the one trusting him, but he needed to believe I would be okay.

Alek would never hurt me. Even though this was killing him, I could see that.

He took one step toward us.

“We don’t have all day,” Narcissa added. I shot her a sharp look.

Alek took the remaining few steps and sat on the couch beside me, closer than before but still an arm’s length away.

“I’ll be okay,” I assured him. “You just need some of my blood in your system.”

His nostrils flared as he stared at me. Something deep in my stomach twisted, heating my body as if Alek were a furnace.

The blood continued to pool in my palm, just enough to cover the skin. Narcissa pushed my hand in Alek’s direction.

He stared at it like it were poison.

I tried not to feel rejection, tried not to feel the wave of guilt that washed through me. I shouldn’t feel guilty for this. He was the one who craved my blood, who needed it.

I was only offering him what he needed the most.

“Drink, boy,” Narcissa ordered.

Alek’s shaking hand found mine, holding my outstretched palm delicately as he lowered his head. He shook his head once, biting his lip. I could see the fight in his strained eyes, in his tense shoulders.

“Fuck,” he mumbled. I wondered if he meant to say that aloud.

But then, as if he were forcing himself to drink before he could think about it anymore, his mouth found my hand.

And he drank.

This was different from the other times Alek had drunk from me, had bitten me. He didn’t bite me at all actually, just ran his tongue across my palm in a wave of heat and fire and restraint.

He held back with every fucking ounce of strength he had. I could feel it in his tense, shaking hands.

He licked my hand clean before sitting up, pulling his own hands back to his lap. Gods, he wasn’t even breathing. He held his breath as he swallowed, ingesting the warm liquid.

Narcissa and I watched. Waited.

“See?” Narcissa teased. “You’re much more restrained than some wild beast running through the forest. You have nothing to fear.”

But Alek didn’t reply. He didn’t look at me, either. Just sat frozen in his position on that couch.

“How do you feel?” I asked.

Alek’s eyes finally met mine. Something flashed in those depths of neon green. “Hungry.”

“You want more?” Narcissa asked.

Alek laughed, but it was more of a strained cough. “Of course I want more. I always want more.”
