But Narcissa was the one who spoke next. “Enough of this,” she said, turning and making her way back into the cottage. “We have a veil to close and a world to save. You’re either helping us, or you’re not, but we’re getting started now. Follow me.”

Yeah. We were all screwed.

Lyra didn’t look as nervous this time around. I suppose after summoning the veil not once but twice already, she was growing more comfortable.

I, however, had to fight to refrain from shaking.

Narcissa knelt across from Lyra and I, the warmth of the freshly lit fireplace accommodating the heat of my nerves. Not only was I going to drink from Lyra, but Wrath and Natalie also stood watching across the cottage.

Along with Theia.

“This is a horrible idea,” the Goddess of Light said snidely from the couch. “I can’t believe you’re letting a demon drink her blood. As if that will help anything.”

“You forget that she is half a demon,” I snapped in return. “If I were you, I’d be careful what I say next.”

She opened her mouth to speak, but swiftly shut it. Theia used to scare me. Hell, I’d be the first to admit that even the idea of the Goddess of Light terrified me.

But now? I saw who she really was. Weak. Cowardly.

Useless.

Lyra held the power of the veil now. Not Theia.

“Ignore her,” Lyra whispered beside me.

The warmth of her breath hitting my neck sent a chill through my body.

“How are you so calm right now?” I whispered back. She knelt on the floor so close, with her arm brushing against mine.

She gave me a half-smile. It was the first smile I’d seen from her in days, and hell, if I wasn’t already kneeling, it would have made my knees weak.

“I trust you,” she said, just loud enough for only me to hear. “And this feels right. I don’t know, I can’t explain it, but I think this is it, Alek. This is going to end everything.”

Hearing her say those words sent a roll of relief through me. I didn’t trust myself nearly as much as Lyra trusted me, but damn. For her, I would make it happen.

She was right about one thing. This would be the end of this mess, no matter what I had to do.

“Okay, then. Let’s get started.” I gave Lyra a wink and turned my attention back to Theia.

Just like last time, Narcissa chanted.

But unlike last time, I felt each word radiate in my bones.

This would be different. I knew Lyra could feel it, too.

Narcissa said the words over and over again, growing louder and louder along with the fire roaring in the stone hearth beside us.

Lyra did not spill her blood on the fire this time.

There was no need.

This time, it would be me who spilled her blood.

Lyra faced me, her eyes wide and locked onto mine.

Neither of us spoke.

Narcissa yelled now, shouting the foreign words over and over again until they consumed us, until they were thick in the air.
