“Drink!” Narcissa ordered. “Drink now!”

Lyra held her wrist out to me, not an ounce of hesitation in her movement. I took her arm, holding her as delicately as possible. If she wanted to pull away, she could at any time. She had to know that.

“Now, Alek! Now!” I hardly heard Narcissa’s voice over the ringing in my ears.

With the last ounce of my restraint slipping, I sank my teeth into Lyra’s delicate skin.

As usual, my teeth split her skin without any hesitation, as if I belonged within her. As if her body were made just for me. The second her blood hit my tongue, my body electrified.

The fire beside us flared. Lyra’s head fell back as I pulled a small amount into my mouth.

I swallowed.

My body warmed. I was no longer sure if it was from my own reaction to her, to her blood, or something deeper, something darker, something that belonged to Lyra entering me and controlling me.

I was the fucking beacon, after all.

I swallowed again.

And again.

Narcissa began chanting again, speaking in some foreign language before she stopped to yell, “More!”

Fuck. I was already taking too much. My body was giving into that instinct to feed, and I could do little to stop it as I drank.

And drank.

And drank.

This was a darkness I couldn’t come back from if I let it control me.

“More!” Narcissa yelled again.

I felt that dark thing creeping up, felt that animal deep within me clawing for a way out.

I couldn’t give into that. I would rip Lyra to shreds if I did.

I ripped my mouth away from her, panting and shaking.

But Lyra’s hands found my face, pulling me to her in the midst of the chaos. The fire roared, louder than the blood pounding in my veins.

“Look at me,” she said. In the chaos, I heard only her. “You must drink. You must take more of it, Alek. Do not be afraid of me. You won’t hurt me, okay? You can’t.”

It wasn’t the words that changed me. Fuck. The way she looked at me was with so much understanding and love, I couldn’t possibly fathom why.

But when she flipped her red hair over her shoulder, exposing the pulsing veins on her neck, my stomach rolled.

Narcissa was yelling at me to keep going, to keep drinking.

But I waited for Lyra.

“Drink, Alek. Take it all from me. It’s yours,” she beckoned.

I knew I was a lost soul the seconds those damned words fell off her tongue.
