But it’s impossible to compare the two. Like Reese, Eric wasn’t shy about his urges. It took him no time at all to start touching my hip when I passed by in the hallway, or commenting on my outfits with an eye for short hemlines or bared midriffs.

The difference is, Eric never appealed to me. He was always just my employer. Plus, he was married. Married men have always been off-limits.

Sure, Reese is off-limits, too. It’s in our contract, signed and sealed, all that jazz.

But these limits feel like they were made to be broken.

I know that I’m not going to get any sleep anytime soon. I feel guilty as I roll over in bed and grab my phone. The light of my screen blinds me, but I blink and power through it as I type out a message.

OLIVIA: Hey, Q. Have you ever wanted to sleep with your boss?

My heart pounds as I send it off. It’s the first time I’ve ever felt so confident in saying it sort of out loud. I want to sleep with Reese Dalton. I know it’s a bad idea. He could do whatever he wanted and I might want it just as much, but if things went south, I would be the one who took the brunt of the backlash. Men with power always get off scot-free. It’s the women who end up hurt.

Quinn’s reply comes in quick.

QUINN: ?????????

Quinn is typing…

QUINN: I mean, like, yeah.

QUINN: Tons of times, actually.

QUINN: Only did it with one, though. Then I got fired.

Quinn is using actual punctuation and real sentences. A telltale giveaway that this is going to end up being a serious conversation.

I take in a deep breath.

OLIVIA: Okay. What made you, like… want to?

The three dots of Quinn typing linger on my screen for a while. Then a barrage of paragraphs come in one after the next.

QUINN: I thought he was really smart. Smart guys always fuck up shit, yanno? But he was also super charming. Like, playboy kinda charming. He was the kind of guy who could just pull chicks just by existing. I fell hard for him.

QUINN: He was actually my first boss right out of college, so, figures. Anyway. He was smart and charming, but also he acted like he valued my intelligence. I have, like, no women coworkers, basically. It’s a little better now, but I was surrounded by guys who didn’t think I belonged there because I was a woman.

QUINN: But not him. It didn’t take a lot for us to get close. We ended up fucking during a late night in his office. For two months, it was like clockwork. We were getting it on damn near everywhere, anytime we could. In and out of the office.

I didn’t know any of that. She’s never breathed so much as a word about this. I figured when she said she’d fucked her boss, it was a one-and-done kind of thing. I bite my lip.

OLIVIA: So… what went wrong?

QUINN: He was married. His wife saw some messages we’d sent and some seriously NSFW pics I’d sent him. The ultimatum was that he fire me, or she was going to divorce him and with the amount of evidence she had from our messages, she’d have probably gotten so much of his money he’d basically be destitute.

QUINN: I told him since I was the reason he was in that situation, that I would help him out. He told me I wasn’t worth it.

My heart sinks at just how matter of fact Quinn states that. Then anger boils in me.

OLIVIA: So he just… fired you because of that? On top of lying that he’d been married?

QUINN: I never said he lied about being married. I knew they were married.

QUINN: But he had lied about them being separated. I thought they were well on their way to a divorce. Lame, huh?

I frown. Okay, she made some bad choices there, no doubts about that. But still…

OLIVIA: He was still trash.
