“The Kingsley’s house is on fire,” Greg says with panic in his eyes.

I end the phone call I was on immediately. The client on the other end will be puzzled, but I will call him back and apologise another time. I couldn’t even think of ending the call properly once I heard Greg say those words. The Kingsleys have acted as my parents since I was abandoned by my own. They need to be okay.

Chase, Dylan, Theo, and Nolan are running out of their offices. We are all looking at each other with terrified looks.

“Anyone know if they were home?” I ask as we all take the elevator down.

“My mom usually spends the day home, and I’m not sure what dad does now that he has retired,” Chase says.

I grab my phone and dial Aubrey, but the thing goes straight to voicemail.

“Where’s your sister?” I ask, calling her again but getting the same result.

“I’ll head to your place and get her. You guys go check on your parents,” Greg says.

I give him the passcode to my penthouse.

The drive is nothing but a blur and, when we get to their house, I can’t help but look at it in horror.

The bottom of the house seems to be on fire. I look over to see that Mitch and Susan are out of the house, but it looks like they are being held back from going back in.

“Thank god you guys are okay,” Chase says while pulling his mom into his arms.

“Aubrey is still inside!” Susan cries out.

I freeze at her words and look at the house while all my deepest fears surface.

“The complete ground floor is on fire,” Mitch says.

“Where was she?” I ask in a panic.

“She was in her room. She had told us that she was going to have a nap,” Susan says with a sob.

“There. In that window,” a firefighter shouts.

The next few minutes become rushed as they try to make it to the window they pointed out. I don’t take my eyes off of it as they get to the open window and there are shouts that I can’t make out.

When I see a body being carried out, I feel relief; until I notice the body is not moving and is lying limp.

“Aubrey!” I shout.

She’s put on a stretcher. “Is she?” I ask, not able to finish the sentence.

“Her pulse is faint but it’s there. We need to get her to the hospital,” the paramedic says.

We move out of the way. I find it hard to let her out of my sigh, but her mom gets into the ambulance with her as we head to our vehicles to follow them.

She has to be okay.

We race to the hospital as the panic rises in me.

We are all waiting in a room for news on her.

The hours pass by before we actually hear anything. The police had time to come by and the news was not good. The fire was started intentionally. The Kingsleys have cameras surrounding and within their house. When we looked at the footage, there were two figures dressed in black with covered faces outside of the home. They had waited for Susan and Mitch to leave before they set the place on fire.

They seemed to wait for a few seconds before taking off.

This means that someone was either sending a message to burn down an empty house, or they actually knew Aubrey was inside and decided to try and take her out. Either way, the outcome isn’t very good.
