“Good. Let me speak with your father, and I’ll give you a call right back with a place to meet him.”

A weight lifted from my chest, and I closed my eyes, letting my head fall back against the headrest. “Thank you, Mom. I love you. I’ll speak to you soon.”

“I love you too, my love. I’m so glad that you are safe.” There was no mistaking the emotion in her voice. It sounded like she was on the verge of tears.

The line went dead, and I set the phone on my leg. Lincoln reached over, holding his palm up, and I put my hand in his, curling my fingers around his.

He gave me a soft smile. “Everything’s going to be okay from here.”

He lifted our hands and kissed the back of mine.

For the first time in a long while, I couldn’t help but feel that he was right. Everything was going to be okay. Things were finally looking up.

There was just one thing missing. Sawyer.

Lincoln must’ve sensed my thoughts. “We’re going to get him here with us, too. I’m not sure how yet, but you’ll see. He’ll be with us before you know it.”

I nodded and put my other hand on top of his, giving him a pat. “I can’t wait for the day when we’re all together again. I didn’t realize it was possible to miss someone that you barely even knew. But you and Sawyer have become so important to me in such a short period. I love you both so much, and it hurts that I haven’t told him that yet.”

Lincoln flipped on his blinker and moved us into the right lane so we could hop on the freeway. “It’s because we’re meant for each other. Literally. We are soulmates, Sloane. The three of us complete each other.”

He pulled my hand into his lap. “Don’t worry about Sawyer. He knows how you feel. We can feel each other’s emotions, remember?”

I couldn’t have said it better myself. He was right. Of course he was right.

“This may sound weird,” I said, “but I’m really glad that I went to your pack to be mated to you.”

He chuckled. “I know what you mean. I’m really glad that you came too, Sloane. I feel like we’re finally on the right path to get where we need to be.”

I blew out a breath and watched as our exit quickly approached. We were entering the main freeway. It would take us all the way back into North Dakota.

My stomach twisted with nausea as I realized that we were getting farther away from Sawyer. We hadn’t heard from him since this morning, and that had been very brief and just to warn us.

“Do you think Sawyer is okay?”

Lincoln frowned and gripped the wheel tighter. “I can only feel emotions from him right now. He seems frustrated, but I don’t feel fear. I don’t think we will hear much from him for a while. He has to be careful. My dad is always watching and ever vigilant. If he caught him trying to contact us, it would blow his cover. They’re probably busy plotting and planning the next move.”

I put my hand on my chest and rubbed it. “I don’t know how he does it.”

Lincoln smiled sadly. “I’m not sure either. It takes a strong person to do what he’s doing.”

I just hoped that it didn’t hurt him too much. Always having to lie and look over your shoulders couldn’t be healthy. He had to do these things to stay in his dad’s good graces.

He was keeping us safe, but at what cost to him? I worried my bottom lip and stared out the window.

Be safe, Sawyer.

I jumped when the phone on my leg vibrated. It illuminated and nearly fell off my lap. I grasped it tightly and swiped my finger over the button when I recognized my dad’s number.

“Hello?” I held my breath.

“Sloane.”

The way he said my name made me swallow hard. His voice was full of emotion like he might cry.

“Your mother told me what happened. We have been so worried about you.”

Nausea churned in my belly. “I’m sorry, Daddy. I didn’t mean to worry you. I’m okay.”
