He stumbled and fell. I released my grip and turned around, watching the other two. They shared a quick look, and then both of them descended on me at the same time.

I snarled, lifting my butt in the air as I watched them. Just before they were on me, I sprang, moving between them and making them crash into each other. The two wolves barked and snapped at each other for a moment, giving me the opportunity to swing back around.

I lunged and landed on top of them with both my front claws extended. My left foot dug into something, and I swiped it down powerfully as I bit into the coat of one of the wolves.

I shook my head back and forth as fast and hard as I could, let go, and then bit the fur again. I flexed and unflexed my claws, letting them sink into whoever my unfortunate victim was.

The two wolves wriggled, trying to break free, but they grew weaker and weaker by the second.

I backed off them as they flopped on the ground, too injured to move. I’d hurt them both, and my bites and claws had almost finished them off. I could deal with them later.

I spun back around to where Mikey had been. My heart dropped. He was gone.

My nose itched as gasoline drifted in the air. A tremor shook my whole body.

No!

I sprinted for the house but stopped short. A wall of flames covered the entire front half of the house. The fire was blazing and spreading fast. I had to get around back and find my mate.

Sloane was still inside. I could feel it.

Nineteen

Sloane

I rubbed my eyes for what felt like the millionth time. They still burned, and everything was a big blur.

My lungs were on fire, and every muscle in my body burned with them. I leaned my head against the wall and blew out a breath as I briefly squeezed my eyes shut.

Fresh tears dribbled down my cheeks. I blinked, letting more tears fall.

A warm hand grasped my fingers. “Sloane, are you okay?” Willa asked.

I nodded and opened my mouth to speak, but all I could manage was a pitiful croak.

She pressed herself against me and rested her head on my shoulder. “Jacob’s fighting the two guys who came in, along with some of the others in here. They’ve got them all but beat. I think Lincoln went outside to confront Mikey.”

I shuddered at the thought of Lincoln fighting Mikey. Mikey had it out for Lincoln. He’d made it his mission to make sure that Lincoln paid for whatever crime he thought he’d committed.

I coughed as I tried to speak. Willa rubbed my back as I smacked my hand against my chest. My throat had dried, and I gasped, forcing air into my lungs.

I squinted even though I still couldn’t see anything while I finally caught my breath. “Can you see Lincoln?”

My voice sounded like a harsh whisper.

Willa went quiet for a moment. “No, but I’m sure he’s fine.”

My throat ached like I’d swallowed needles. “He was hit with the wolfsbane, too. What if he can’t shift?”

Lincoln was still injured from before. He never really had a chance to recover. He wasn’t in any position to fight his brother, especially someone as ruthless and vile as Mikey.

Willa hugged me. “Lincoln is strong, Sloane. I’m sure he’s fine.”

She continued to rub my back. “He didn’t seem affected by the wolfsbane like everybody else. Everyone who was right there with you has the same symptoms as you, but he jumped right into the action like it didn’t bother him at all.”

She was right; he had been right next to me. He’d had so much of it in the past. Maybe it didn’t affect him like it did everybody else.

“That would be something positive. I hope that’s the case.” I squeezed Willa’s hand and jutted my head forward. Not that it helped me see any better. Everything still looked fuzzy. “Tell me what’s going on. Are we still holding our own? Nobody’s run, right? Has anyone been hurt that you can tell?”
