He belly laughed as he hit his palm on the ground. “I was right. I was right about you.”

I squeezed my eyes shut briefly and swallowed, my throat tight.

I know. Do it, I answered after a long moment.

Sloane coughed as she fell on her knees next to me and gripped my arms. “Sawyer, are you okay?”

I blinked at her. She was a blotch in my vision, but her hands felt cool, quelling the inferno in my limbs.

Lincoln stepped over the top of me and stopped in front of Mikey. He lifted a flexed claw and held it over him. He doesn’t deserve a quick death.

Sloane made a noise in the back of her throat. She clutched my hand to her as she looked at Lincoln. “Just finish him. Please.”

Lincoln exhaled loudly and delivered the fatal blow to Mikey’s throat. He gurgled, sputtering as he tried to breathe, and then he fell quiet.

I chewed on the inside of my cheek as emotion clogged my throat. Mikey didn’t deserve my sadness. He was a monster, but he had been my brother.

And now he was dead.

At least I could have peace knowing he couldn’t hurt anyone again.

Lincoln sprang off to the right. I’ll be right back. I’m going to check the perimeter before I shift.

He didn’t give either of us a chance to respond before he disappeared.

Sloane leaned down and pressed a kiss to my lips. “The pain will pass in a few minutes.”

I chuckled and gripped her hand tighter. “You being here makes it better.”

She pressed her forehead against mine. “I love you. I’m so glad you’re okay.”

I reached up and brushed my hands through her mussed hair. “I was worried about you. I could feel your fear. All I could think about was finding you.”

Sloane lifted her head, her gaze going to Mikey. She licked her lips and shivered. “He can’t hurt anyone anymore.”

I grunted as I pushed up into a sitting position. My head swam, and I rubbed my temple with my free hand.

A twig snapped, and we both looked to the trees. Lincoln emerged in his human form, a bundle of clothes in his hands. He’d already dressed.

Lincoln handed me the clothes. “I found these in a box. Most of the fighting seems to be toward the front of the property.”

I took them and stood on wobbly legs, then I limped to a fallen tree and sat down. Sloane watched me, her eyes narrowed and her bottom lip tucked between her teeth.

She sat next to me and rubbed my back. “Are you sure you’re okay? You got a big whiff of that wolfsbane.”

I waved my hand as I slipped the boxers and then the sweats up over my legs and stood. “I’m good. Promise.”

That was a lie. There were currently two of her, and the world spun.

Leaves crunched as Lincoln grabbed me and Sloane in a hug. “We don’t have long before you have to leave.”

Sloane inhaled sharply. “Sawyer, you can’t possibly be going back.”

She pulled away. Tears brimmed in her eyes, and she shook her head. “Sawyer, no. Please, no.”

My fingers trembled as I reached out to her, so I let my hands fall to my sides. “I have to. I’ll take Mikey back with me.”

Sloane reeled back and crossed her arms over her chest. “Why? Why are you going back? Lincoln, help me talk sense to him. Mikey said your dad suspects you.”
