I clasped Lincoln’s arm. “I am his confidant. He trusts me, despite what Mikey says.”

Lincoln frowned, his brows pinching together. “Are you sure?”

His gaze went to Mikey.

I swallowed and thought back to the past few days. No. I wasn’t. “He won’t have a choice but to believe me when I carry Mikey back to him.”

Sloane pointed at the ground as she started to pace. “No, you need to stay here with us, where it’s safe. I can’t stand the thought of you going back there.”

Tears slid down her face, and she swiped them away.

My chest tightened, and my heart skipped a few beats. I should’ve been pleasing my mate, not making her cry.

I ground my teeth and looked into the woods. Howls sounded in the distance and drew closer. We were running out of time, and I didn’t want to part when she was so upset.

“If I stay, then you won’t know what’s happening. My father could attack at any time, and you’ll have no warning.”

Her brows knitted together. “That’s what the wiretaps are for.”

I looked down at the ground as I shook my head. “That trick probably won’t work again. My dad’s paranoid. He’s liable to cut off all communication.”

Her bottom lip trembled. “And if you give us too much, you put yourself in danger. Alpha Dane might be deranged, but he is smart. He’s going to figure it out, Sawyer. If you’re there when he does…”

I flexed my fists at my sides. “I know what I’m doing.”

Protecting Lincoln and Sloane was my priority. As long as they were safe, I didn’t care if it put me in danger.

Lincoln raked a hand through his hair. “We are in an impossible situation. You both have valid points.”

Sloane put one hand on Lincoln’s chest. “Help me reason with him. Please!”

Lincoln’s face fell, and he reached up and put a hand on her cheek. “The main pack house has been destroyed. We don’t know what effect that will have on the pack here. There will be significant casualties on both sides tonight. Mikey’s death will give my father pause. Sawyer can capitalize on it.”

I closed the distance and wrapped them both in an embrace, sandwiching Sloane between us.

I put my mouth to her ear. “Everything is going to be okay. I promise.”

She sobbed, her whole body shuddering. “I can’t keep doing this. The not knowing if you’re okay. Sawyer, we could feel your panic earlier.”

I made hushing noises as I met Lincoln’s gaze.

He gave my arm a squeeze. “Sawyer is going to make sure he stays in contact with us at least once a day, no matter what.”

I swallowed. “I will. I promise.”

Sloane buried her face into Lincoln’s shoulder as she continued to cry.

I pressed a soft kiss to her cheek. “Please know that my only wish is to protect you. I love you and Lincoln more than anything else in this world.”

Sloane turned. Tears streaked down her dirty cheeks. “We love you too, and we’re trying to protect you.”

I swiped her tears away with my thumb. “I know.”

I gave her a chaste kiss on the lips and pulled Lincoln in closer so our heads pressed together. “Lincoln and I always knew that the best way to bring my father’s tyranny to an end was from the inside. I’m the only one who can accomplish that now. Please understand.”

Sloane sniffled. “Promise me the three of us will be together one day.”

I winced and pulled my mates closer. “I promise.”
