I send the text message to Lennox then click the screen off and shove my phone back in my purse. I came upstairs needing to pee and after wrestling with my tight ass dress and trying to squat above the dirty toilet, I didn’t feel like going back. So I chose to lie in the bathtub. It was cleaner than the toilet, believe it or not.

I needed a break from the party downstairs. It’s awkward. Weird.

I only know a few people besides Landon and it’s mostly from either seeing them at parties, around campus, or having a class together.

My phone buzzes and I pull it out.

Lennox: Definitely sounds like a frat party to me

Me: The sex theme is a little over the top

Lennox: LOL, tends to be a common theme w them, u know, the sex and drinking

Me: U don’t say…lol

Lennox: can’t wait for the juicy deets, now go have fun and bring home a penis balloon for me

Me: lol, xo

I sigh. She’s right. Why am I even surprised?

Tap, tap, tap. “Anyone in there?”

I freeze and sit up. Damn it, isn’t there another bathroom around?

“Hello? Everleigh?”

My back stiffens and a wild storm of butterflies takes over my stomach. It’s Landon. Shit. The last thing I wanted was for him to catch me hiding out.

“Yeah, I’ll be right out.”

“No, it’s okay. No rush. You’d been gone a while; I thought you might’ve left.”

I climb out of the tub and smooth my dress down. I check my face in the mirror and apply a fresh coat of lipstick, then a dab of gloss. “Nope, sorry if you’re disappointed.”

“I wouldn’t have asked you here if I wanted you to ditch me. But I do want to see who won the contest. The votes are being tallied right now.”

“I’m coming.” I give myself one more look over and fix an out of place hair. When I open the door, he’s leaning on the door frame, one arm above his head and warmth floods my insides. My eyes roam up and down, unable to take in all of the sexiness. Damn it, why does he have to look so good?

“You okay?” Landon asks and I can tell he means it, the caring look on his face one I’ve never seen before and almost don’t believe.

“Would you care if I said no?” I ask and place a hand on my hip.

“Of course I would, what kind of question is that?”

“A good one, in my opinion.”

“Well in my opinion, it’s not. Look, I know this isn’t your usual scene. Which is why I offered you so much when asking you to come. Because I knew it was a big thing to ask of you. I want to ensure you’re having a good time at least.”

“Since when do you care?”

Landon shrugs. “Since now. If you want, we can go after they announce the winners.”

I shake my head. “Nah, that’s okay. Let’s go see who won.” I thread my arm through his this time and let him lead me downstairs.

As we descend the stairs of the large frat house, I look at the framed photographs hanging on the walls, pictures of previous members and various events. In some, the clothes are beyond ugly, with huge sashes.

“Imagine me with the huge sash? Ridiculous.”
