“Yeah? Like what?” His eyes search mine and he leans close.

My breath hitches and my heart doubles in speed.

“Like my middle name or my favorite color…”

“Then fill me in.” He moves a little closer.

I want to lean back but I don’t, my body rooted in place and at his mercy. “Why did you ask me to this party versus one of your typical girls?”

His eyes shift away for a mere second and I brace myself against the table.

“I wanted someone nice. Someone who presents themselves better.” His words are slow, the alcohol heavy on his tongue just like on mine. “You’re not like those party girls.”

Again, there’s the sincerity in his eyes. The sincerity I’ve seen so much of tonight but not much before.

What are all these sides of Landon?

“What am I like then?” The question tumbles out. Damn alcohol and all the false courage it gives me.

He moves another inch closer and our knees brush under the table. There isn’t much space left between us, our chairs already close, and my heart now triples in speed.

“You’re…” His voice trails off and he moves towards me.

He’s going to kiss me- he’s going to kiss me!

No!

Yes!

NO!

YES!

“Yoooooo!” A loud voice booms through the kitchen and we spring apart. “Landon’s about to take the V!”

Several guys, some still in tuxes, some now in a t-shirt and shorts, file into the kitchen. One of them starts chanting, “Take. The. V. Take. The. V.”

Landon flies to his feet and marches toward them. “Shut the fuck up. Really?” He runs his hands through his hair.

“What’s the big deal, bro?”

“You guys sound like assholes, that’s what.”

“Yo, what’s your problem? It’s not like the theme of the party is a secret.”

What the hell is this guy talking about? What is take the—oh fuck no.

I push to my feet, using one hand to steady myself, my legs shaky. “What the hell is he talking about?” I say each word slowly, mostly because I’m drunk, but also because the burning sensation I’ve been feeling all night suddenly doesn’t feel so good anymore.

Landon turns around and faces me. “Listen, Ev, I was going to tell you but I never had the chance—”

Big mouth cuts him off. “You didn’t tell her it was bring a virgin for a date? Damn, Landon. That’s cold.”

The burning takes over my entire body, my skin on fire, but worst on my face. Bring a virgin party? What in the actual fuck is happening?

No. No. No fucking way.

There’s no way he did this…
