Everleigh nods. “I know. I should help Holden do something special for her.”
“I bet she’d love that.”
“How was the rest of your week?”
“Are we suddenly talking like friends now?”
Ev scowls. “Just answer the question.”
“It was alright. I got one good surf morning in. Besides that, the waves were crappy, and my classes were boring. Today’s a lot better, though.”
“Why’s that?”
“Being here with you, enjoying your company. Seeing Lennox and Holden happy. It’s a good night.”
Her face softens and she looks at me in a way I haven’t seen before. Like she might actually like me instead of tolerating me.
“You’re cute.” She looks away after the words tumble out and giggles.
“What was that?” I tease, knowing damn well I heard her perfectly clear.
“That’s cute.”
She definitely said you’re cute, but I let it go. What’s a little harmless flirting? It’s all make pretend right?
You know what’s not pretend though? The way we’re looking at one another right now. I can’t tear my eyes away from hers and my heart thumps loudly in my chest.
