“Oh yeah you are. One time she tried to set me up on a blind date with her co-worker's son. I shut that right down.”

Bella laughs harder. “Stop, stop, I’m crying.”

I laugh along with her and it feels really good. At least we bond over our strict parents. We always have. When you’re both stuck at home together because your parents won’t let friends come over, or us go to their houses or how they would decline every birthday party invite, or not let us join sports or clubs, yet instead giving us long lists of chores and books to read with reports due at the end, then yeah you grow close. We would trade on chores and cover for each other which made our home life a lot easier to deal with.

“Be safe tonight. If you need me to cover you, text me. I love you, Bels.”

“Love you always, Ev. Mwah.” She blows me a kiss before ending our FaceTime call.

I move to my desk and once again go over my notes from class about how tomorrow will work. I practice with online tests about the proper way to draw blood from a patient’s arm and what to do if you miss the vein or can’t find one.

After a while, my stomach rumbles and I go in search of Lennox. I find her in her bedroom, studying at her desk. I tap on the half opened door and blink a couple times to make sure what I’m seeing is correct. “Wow. A Friday night and you’re studying? Did you turn into me or something?”

Her head snaps up, her messy bun of red hair almost spilling down her back but when her eyes meet mine, a huge smile stretches across her face causing her freckles to dance along her cheeks. “I guess you finally rubbed off on me.”

“Not a bad thing.” I sit on her bed and curl my legs up under me. “Wanna grab something to eat? I’m starving.”

“Yes, you read my mind.”

We order a pizza and sit down in front of the TV, Lennox settling on a channel playing reruns of The Big Bang Theory.

“Is it weird not being out at a party tonight?” Me, I'm used to it, my first party ever was freshman weekend here and Lennox dragged me along for the wild ride. I soon discovered I’d rather be curled up in bed with a good book than dodging people, downing shots, and yelling over loud music. But I still joined her at quite a few.

“Nah, to be honest, I don’t miss it.”

My mouth drops open a tad and I try to laugh it off but Lennox is quick and she playfully jabs me in the side. I hold my hands up as I dissolve into a fit of giggles under my fluffy blanket. I’m in my favorite spot on the couch, the cushions imprinted with my shape. “I’m sorry I just never thought I’d hear you say that. I know you don’t go out like you used to but I thought you’d miss it.”

“Maybe a tad. But this is fun too and doesn’t make you feel like death warmed over the next day.” She grins.

You make a good point. I’m happy for you Len. The summer did you good.”

Lennox went home for the summer after her falling out with Holden and her confession of being sexually assaulted back in high school. It was a lot that happened all at once. But it really did her a world of good. She looks a lot happier.

“Thanks, Ev. Now If only a certain someone would see themselves out of my brain, I’d be even better.” Lennox says just as the door buzzer sounds. She jumps up before I can blink. “I’ll get it.”

I wish those two would make up already but I know Len needs time. The way Holden looks at her is the exact way I want someone to look at me.

A certain someone.

Ew, what the hell is wrong with me?

Besides, Who am I kidding?

He doesn’t even look my way.

I stare at the door Landon just walked through and wonder- did that really happen? Did Landon come in here out of the blue and ask me to be his date?

I look around.

I pinch myself.

Ow.

Okay I’m not dreaming.

I run through the events of the night. There was dinner and TV with Len. She went to bed, I put on a true crime documentary, and dozed off on the couch. Until I woke up to the sound of knocking on my door and almost had a heart attack.

There stood Landon.
