“Sweet.” I clap my hands and stand. “It’s a date then. I’ll text you.”

I don’t give her a chance to change her mind before I’m out the door.

It’s in the bag.

Chapter 2

Everleigh

“How am I going to a party tonight and you’re not?” My little sister, Bella, laughs into the camera as she applies mascara to her long pretty eyelashes. I swear she got all the exotic beauty and I’m just the plain Jane, though Bella would disagree and tell me to shut the fuck up.

“You’re a freshman. You should be going to a party.” I answer. “I, on the other hand, thought senior year would be easy. My professors proved me wrong. Especially since I have to get up at the ass crack of dawn tomorrow for clinicals.” I snuggle into my pillows and watch my sister slide lipstick over her full lips.

“You’ve waited three years, quite impatiently I’d say, for clinicals to happen, so don’t complain.”

“Witch.” I mumble with a smile on my face.

“Hey, I heard that. And you know it’s the truth.”

“Yeah, yeah. How did you convince mom and dad to let you go out tonight?”

“I told them I was sleeping at Nikki’s. They almost said no to that but they really can’t stop me, since I’m eighteen and paying rent.”

“Bels, you really need to break free already. Come here, to SCU, and we can hang out together.” She’ll never transfer here to Sierra Cove University, or SCU as we all call it, but it’s worth a try.

“I can’t. My job here has major connections. And they’re going to pay for my education once I complete one more year of working for them. You know all of this. Besides, you’ll be graduating and moving back here. To hang out with me.”

“You’re nuts if you think I’m moving back home. Now that I’ve had space and freedom, there’s no way I’m living in our town.”

“I didn’t say our home town. But being close is nice. I’m thinking of studying at UCLA. So maybe we could find an apartment together near there.”

“Now you’re talking, Bels. But I don’t know. Everything feels so up in the air. My friends seem to have plans for after school ends but I don’t feel so sure.”

“Well you’ll have a career as a lab technician that you can take anywhere with you. Hospitals always need help.”

“Yeah, that’s true.”

“Aw, Ev, don’t be sad. You always wanted to work in the medical field and help people. It’ll all work out in the end, remember?”

Our mom might be strict and overbearing but she always left us with words of wisdom. One thing she told us often was that all things work out in the end, and if it hasn’t worked out yet, then it’s not the end.

“It’s not over yet. If it was, you’d have it all figured out. Where’s Lennox and Maia tonight?”

“Lennox is here, we might grab a bite to eat together, and Maia is out with her new boyfriend.”

“Oh, oh, you didn’t tell me the tea, Ev!”

“Not much to tell. They literally started dating like last weekend, and she’s been hanging out with him nonstop. I’ve barely seen her the past week. I think his name is Alex. But she seems happy.”

“Good. Any dates lined up for you, big sis?”

I scrunch my nose. “Nah. I’ve got too much other stuff on my mind than to worry about dating. Even with mom on my back about it.”

Bella groans as she slips on some earrings. “I told her to lay off. Both of us.”

“I wish. I swear if she sends me one more awful online dating profile, I’m going to put her on do not disturb indefinitely.”

Bella bursts into a fit of giggles. “Oh my God. She needs to stop. I haven’t been lucky enough to get a recommendation of hers yet, but I think I’m all set.”
