I scoff. Okay, maybe I was wrong when I said I act like I hate him. Damn, he makes it so easy with those cocky ass remarks. “Like you could ever be so lucky.” I walk ahead of him and descend the staircase, not caring any longer if he’s hurt or not. He seems perfectly fine to me.

He quickly catches up, hot on my trail as he follows. “Where you headed to so early, princess?”

I roll my eyes at him as I round the corner and he rolls his own back at me. “Real mature.” I mutter under my breath. “Don’t call me princess.” I say loud enough for him to hear me.

“Well, we are going on a date, so shouldn’t I be allowed to give you a nickname?”

“One date does not equal nickname status. Don’t make me change my mind.”

“Oh, you’ve got me really worried, Ev. You know you want to go with me.”

“You’re the one who seems to need me. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have places to be.” I say as I walk through the lobby and out the front door. I’m hoping the door shuts in his face from the little pull towards me I gave as it closed but he’s too quick and snakes on thru, surfboard and all.

“Places, huh? Busy girl, I guess. Glad you could squeeze me in.”

“You should be glad. By the way, I’m going to need a proper dress jacket to wear, too. You understand, right? Don’t want to be chilly in my formal gown.” I stop on the sidewalk and turn to face him. Then I rub my hands up and down my sweatshirt covered arms as if they were bare and fake a shiver.

His jaw clenches and I bite back my laugh as I take a few steps backwards.

“Maybe a necklace, too. Oh and some new perfume.” A few more steps back.

“Now you’re pushing it.”

“Gotta run. Have a good surf.” I wiggle my fingers in a small wave and grin before I turn and walk around the side of the building, not giving him a chance to respond.

My cheeks grow warm as I practically jog down the sidewalk towards the health building.

Alright, so maybe I do still have a crush on him.

But as far as hating him?

I don’t think I need to put on an act anymore.

How can I like and hate someone at the same time?

Chapter 3

Landon

I crunch on another mouthful of my favorite cereal, Lucky Charms, the sweet mix of marshmallows and cold milk unlike any other food combination. I’m pretty confident I could survive on cereal alone and die a happy guy.

In between bites, I laugh at an episode of SpongeBob I’ve seen a bunch of times that is just as funny as the first time I saw it.

Rhett groans as he plops down on the couch next to me. “This damn cartoon again? Don’t you ever get sick of it?”

“Nope.” I pour more cereal into my bowl from the box and then milk from the jug, both sitting at my feet, ready for refills. Three bowls is usually my go to amount, sometimes more, sometimes less. I burn it all off at the gym or when I’m surfing anyway.

Rhett shakes his head as he watches me devour my second bowl. “I’ve never seen anyone eat as much cereal as you do. Or watch cartoons this much.”

“Now you do. Feel free to share how amazing your best friend Landon is.”

“You mean, how amazing you are because of me?”

I laugh so hard I almost drop my spoon. “Whatever you need to believe, man. You missed an awesome surf sesh this morning.”

“I tried, but when my alarm went off, sleep won. Too many damn beers last night.”

“You took my hangover cure before you went to bed right? I left it on your desk.”
