“Doesn’t licking your fry make it soggy?” I smirk, watching her with amusement in my eyes. She’s too cute. I could watch her all night.

“Nope,” Maia says as she does it again. “They’re perfect.”

“Just like you.” The words tumble out of my mouth, and I mentally curse myself. Where the hell did that come from?

Maia blushes and looks away.

Shit, too far, Rhett. Too far. I’m an idiot.

“How's your sandwich?” I ask in a desperate attempt to pretend I never said what I know I just did.

“It’s pretty tasty. Just like you.”

Her words throw me for a loop, and my head snaps up from my plate. Maia’s laughing so hard, she’s clutching her stomach and bent in half.

“Haha, very funny.” I take another bite of my burger but end up laughing mid-bite and have to spit it out.

“Ew!” Maia cries between more fits of laughter.

We laugh so loud that we attract the attention of others around us.

But I don’t care.

Because if it’s Maia’s laughter, then it’s the only sound I want to hear.

Chapter 8

Maia

A sinking feeling hits me square in the gut when I see our apartment building up ahead.

I don’t want the day to end.

Nor do I want to deal with my phone, which still remains powered off in my room.

“Let me know if they ever need any extra volunteers at the orphanage. I’d love to help,” Rhett says as he parks his car in the back of the lot.

His offer to help warms my heart. Alex has never once asked me about my volunteer work, never mind offering to go. “Actually, they will be. With the holiday season coming up, there are extra events going on. For Thanksgiving, they do a big turkey dinner, and then there’s the toy drive in December.”

“I wish I could say I was a good cook, but no matter how many cooking shows I watch, I still suck,” Rhett says. “But I’m a great gift wrapper.”

Does he always need to be so damn cute?

“I could show you how to cook a thing or two, and maybe you can give me some wrapping tips. Those corners, man. Hard as shit.”

Rhett laughs, and I forget my nerves for a few, the sound comforting. I study his side profile in the darkness and notice how comfortable he makes me, like I can truly be myself.

“You bet. I’m a pro at corners.”

“Why does that sound so dorky?” I snort.

“Because it is.”

We both burst into laughter.

Rhett cuts the engine, and it’s like a signal the night is over. With a deep breath, I unbuckle my seat belt and grab my bag. “Thanks for a fun day, Rhett. It was much better than what I originally had planned.” I open the car door, but Rhett places his hand on my arm, and I freeze.

“Wait, Maia?—”
