I stomp away, sand flying up in every direction behind me.
“Wait, Maia. Let’s talk about this.”
“No. I need to go.”
I ignore his pleas for me to come back. If he really wants to talk to me, he’ll follow me.
But when I look over my shoulder, he’s still sitting in the same spot, watching me.
Fuck men.
And fuck love.
It’s nothing but a bunch of bullshit that leaves you broken.
Chapter 11
Maia
“Wow. So you really are a slut. I fucking knew it.”
Alex’s voice turns my blood into ice.
He’s standing on the boardwalk, his hands shoved into his pockets.
I swallow over the lump in my throat. I check behind me and see Rhett still there, watching.
“We’re broken up. I can kiss whoever the fuck I want.” I still can’t believe I kissed him. What was I thinking?
His face turns red, and he removes his hands from his pockets, clenching his fingers into fists at his sides. “We’re not done until I say we are.”
I roll my eyes.
He takes another step forward, his face darkening more. “It’s been less than ten minutes since you ran out of my apartment. You move on that quick? Or am I right in saying you were a slut all along? I see pretty surfer boy sitting on the beach, staring at you, wanting a girl who’s not his, a girl who’s already claimed by me,” he growls, and I want to puke.
“No one claims me, Alex. Certainly not you. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have somewhere to be.”
“I’ll join you.”
“No, you won’t. We’re broken up. I don’t ever want to see you again.”
A blank stare overtakes Alex’s face, and fuck, it’s terrifying. He raises one arm and stomps toward me. He wants to hurt me.
I want to duck. I want to run. I want to hide.
What the fuck is happening?
Before I have a chance to react, a loud “Hey!” comes from behind me. Rhett.
Alex’s blank stare goes from me to him, and I freeze.
Shit, shit, shit! This is not going to end well.
“Oh hey, Rhett. Did you come to take your slut back?”
“Don’t fucking speak to her that way.”
“Who the hell are you talking to like that?”
