I hear Rhett’s questions, and I freeze.

No, no, no. Please don’t let him see me this way. Please, no.

I stand quickly and wipe the remaining tears away. “Yeah, I’m fine. I tripped and hurt my, uh, my foot.”

Rhett looks like he doesn’t buy it, but thankfully, he lets it go. “Let’s get you home, yeah?” He offers his arm, and I gladly take it. I let him guide me up the stairs and to my apartment door. A warm feeling replaces the cold ones left by Alex, and I feel as if I can breathe again.

What is going on?

“Don’t you have an early surf lesson to teach?”

A grin dusts over his lips. “You remembered, huh? Don’t worry about me. I’ll be good.”

“Were you going somewhere?”

He laughs. “So many questions. I was actually coming to check on you.”

“Me? Why?”

He laughs again. “I don’t know. Something told me to. Call it instinct, I guess. I was right, though.”

“I’m okay, but thank you. Just a little couple spat. It’ll be over by the morning.”

“Maia, um, you know…”

“What?”

Rhett reaches up and scratches the back of his head, his shaggy hair falling in front of his deep blue eyes. “Never mind, it’s nothing. Have a good night, okay? I hope you're not too sad anymore.”

The sweetest smile I’ve ever seen on a guy stretches across his face, and my heart lurches in my chest.

How have I never seen Rhett this way before?

This night is so weird.

So confusing.

Maybe I am more drunk than I thought.

“Have a good night, too.”

He turns to go.

“Oh, and Rhett?”

“Yeah?” He turns back with a hopeful look on his face, and my stomach flutters.

“Thank you.”

“Anytime, Maia. Anytime.”

Sunlight bursts through the blinds in my room, and I groan as I crack one eye open. My head throbs, and I squeeze my eyes closed tighter.

But it’s still too bright. I throw the covers off and pull my curtains shut. The room goes dark, and I sigh in relief. Blackout curtains are perfection.

I climb back in bed, pull the covers over my head, and close my eyes.
