“Meaning?”

“I know some men will say anything to get in good with a woman.”

He sat back, folded his arms, and stared at her.

“I’m not one of them. I’m being honest. There is no ulterior motive, Addison.”

She stared back at him, then nodded.

“I believe you.”

“Good. I won’t lie to you.”

“Please don’t. I don’t need another heartache.”

Cody reached across the table and touched her hand.

“I try my best not to hurt anyone. I know it can’t always be avoided, but I would never intentionally hurt you, Addison. You have my word on that.”

“Are you sure you’re over Gwyn?”

“I’m positive. Look, I’m not going to lie. I was in love with her, but when she balked at signing the prenup, I knew she didn’t love me. Just my bank account.”

“I’m sorry.”

“It’s all right. I’m just glad I found out before I married her.”

“Me too. What would you do if she did find you again?”

“I’d have to make her see that we’re never getting back together. I’m sure, if she finds out where I am, she’ll be back.”

“Will she cause problems for you?”

“She’ll just annoy the hell out of me while she tries to get me back. It’s nothing new. We’d argue and break up all the time.” He shrugged.

“Doesn’t sound like a healthy relationship.”

“Toxic would be a good word for it.”

Addison nodded. “I had one of those relationships. Not with Stuart, but a guy I dated in college. He was so jealous of any man I spoke to.”

“I’m glad you got away from him.”

“Me too. He actually stalked me for a while until I went to the police. Once they talked to him, he backed off. I met Stuart two years later. I was twenty. I fell in love with him almost from the start.”

“Was he in the military then?”

“Yes, he had just enlisted. He grew up an army brat and that’s all he wanted to do.”

“Did you move around a lot?”

“No. Once he enlisted, he immediately signed up to go to Afghanistan. I didn’t want him to go but he wanted to serve his country. I was proud of him, but I was always terrified when he’d re-enlist. I could never talk him out of it.”

“I’m sorry you went through that.”

“Thank you. We, well, I wanted kids so badly, but as long as he stayed in the army, I refused. I wish now I would have gone ahead and had them. I’m not getting any younger.”

“You still have time though.”
