“Did you eat?”

“Not since seven.”

“If you haven’t left yet, could you get us burgers from the diner? I’ll pay you back when you get here.”

“I can do that. I’m just getting in my car. I’ll call Connie and order them, then I’ll be there.”

“Great. I’m starving. I’ll see you soon. Be careful.”

“Always. Bye.” She disconnected.

Since she’d be a little longer, he decided to work in the office until she arrived.

Chapter Four

Addison entered the diner and waved when some of the patrons called out to her. She took a seat at the counter and waited for someone to help her. It was packed so she knew everyone was busy. She smiled when she saw Rissa heading for her.

“Hi, Addison. What can I get you?”

“I called a to-go order in, Rissa.”

“Okay, let me check for you,” she said then grinned when the door opened.

Addison glanced over to see Rissa’s husband, Reece Maddox, enter the diner. He winked at Rissa, leaned over the counter and kissed her, then sat beside Addison.

“I’ll get your order, Addison.” Rissa entered the kitchen.

“Hey, Reece.”

“Addie, how are you?” he asked her.

Some people would always call her ‘Addie’ though she preferred her full name. It didn’t matter, she knew it was because she’d grown up here, and the nickname was because she was one of them.

“I’m fine, Reece. You?”

“Good. Is the pharmacy keeping you busy?”

“Always.”

“That’s good, though, right? It makes work easier if you’re kept busy.”

Addison nodded and they continued to talk for a few minutes when Rissa returned from the kitchen with a bag. Addison handed her the cash for it, waved away the change, and picked up the bag.

“You two have a nice day,” she said, then walked out the door to head for Cody’s place.

She couldn’t wait to see him. Nibbling on her bottom lip, she wondered where this would go. She shrugged. There was only one way to find out. If he broke her heart, she’d be pissed. She’d been through enough pain losing a husband and though that had almost destroyed her, she was sure it would be just as bad or worse if Cody hurt her. She couldn’t believe how attracted to him she was. From the minute he walked into the pharmacy, she wanted him. It had been so long since she’d been intimate with a man, and since her husband was the only man, she’d been with, she was both terrified and excited to see what she and Cody could have together.

After getting into her vehicle, she set the bag on the passenger seat, started the car, and drove out of the parking lot.

She was anxious about getting on a horse, but she wanted to try it. She’d been born and raised in Clifton, but never learned to ride. She just never had the opportunity to learn. With school, then college, attaining her degree, and getting married, she barely fit in time to breathe.

She slowed the car to pull into the driveway of Cody’s home and drove to the porch. After shifting into first gear, she shut it off, opened the door, grabbed the bag with their food, and stepped out. She heard the door open and looked to see Cody on the porch.

“Nice car. I was looking for your SUV,” he said with a grin.

Addison laughed. “I love my bug. It belonged to my nana. She bought it new when she was seventeen.” Her grandmother had given her the yellow Volkswagen Beetle a few years ago, and she loved the car.

“What year is it?”
