“Nineteen-seventy.”

“Convertible, too. Damn, that’s nice.”

“She kept it in excellent condition. I love driving it. It’s also a straight stick,” she said with a grin.

“A woman after my own heart. Are those our burgers, sweetheart?”

She held the bag up. “I got mine. I don’t think they gave me yours.”

When his eyes narrowed at her, she laughed.

“I hope you’re kidding.”

“Yep, and I got you onion rings this time.”

“Well, come in then. I’m starving.”

She climbed the steps and stopped beside him. He leaned down, kissed her lips, and took the bag from her. She smiled, as he led her into the house.

Cody set the bag on the counter, leaned over it and inhaled, then groaned.

“It smells so good. Once we eat, we’ll head to the barn.”

“Okay.”

“Addison, if you’d rather not learn, it’s fine.”

“No, I want to learn. I’m just nervous.”

“I will put you on the calmest horse I have.”

“All right. Let’s eat then.”

They sat at the bar in the kitchen, and every time he took a bite, Cody had to stop moaning at the taste of the food. The onion rings were the best he’d ever had.

“That diner is a goldmine, isn’t it?”

Addison swallowed her burger, wiped her mouth with the napkin, and nodded.

“Connie and Owen are two of the best people you could ever meet in this town. Everyone loves them.”

“Everyone I’ve met here has been great.”

“If they like you, they’ll take you in as one of their own. Sometimes it can get a little irritating because everyone knows just about everything about each other. But that’s also part of the charm. It’s never malicious. The outpouring of support I got when Stuart was killed was unbelievable. I will never forget it.”

“That’s what’s so great about small towns.”

Once they finished eating, they cleaned up the trash, and walked outside. He took her hand and led her down the steps, but he stopped beside her car, and peered inside.

“It’s in excellent condition,” he said.

“Yeah, she took care of it.”

“Is she still living?”

“Oh, yeah, and going strong. She gave it to me because it rides a little rough. They didn’t have the best suspension back then, so it’s hard on her back. I gladly took it off her hands.”
