Addison started the car, shifted it into reverse, backed up, and drove off. She looked in the rearview mirror to see him watching her with his hands on his hips. She smiled. She really liked him but hoped he didn’t break her heart.

Love can be so complicated, but it could also be very painful at times. It was the best feeling in the world and also the worst. People had to take chances, or they’d never be happy. She wanted to fall in love again, but she was scared. No one wanted a broken heart, but that’s life. If you want to see a rainbow, you have to endure a little rain. She learned that from her grandmother.

As she drove home, she thought about Cody. He was someone she could fall for. She just hoped if she did, he would fall for her too. She didn’t like being alone. It had been so rough on her the first year after Stuart died. She’d sit in the house just staring at the walls while crying.

That was when Lollipop appeared in her life. Her grandmother stopped by to check on her and brought Lolli along. Addison fell in love with the little bundle of fur. She needed something in her life to help her with her grief and the dog was the perfect companion.

She might be little, but she was a great watchdog, and as Cody said, those teeth could still bite.

The following morning, she arrived at the pharmacy and unlocked the door. She strolled inside and made her way behind the counter to deposit her purse in the safe. After securing her belongings, she walked around the store, switching on the lights. Owning the pharmacy was a dream come true for her. It had been her goal since graduation, and she was grateful that at least one plan had worked out in her life despite everything else falling apart.

As she headed back toward the counter, the door opened, and Kinley entered.

“Good morning,” Addison greeted her with a smile.

“Hey, good morning. Can you believe it’s Monday again?” Kinley complained.

Addison chuckled. “Did your weekend fly by too quickly?”

“Always. How was yours?”

“Amazing. Cody took me horseback riding at his ranch.” She couldn’t help but laugh as Kinley gasped and stared at her incredulously.

“Cody? That ridiculously hot man who couldn’t keep his eyes off you? You lucky bitch,” Kinley playfully scolded.

“Yes, that Cody. We also watched some movies.”

“And...?” Kinley raised an eyebrow expectantly.

“That’s all, I promise. I’m not ready to rush into anything yet.”

“It’s been three years since Stuart died,” Kinley reminded her.

“I know, but I’ve only been with Stuart. I want to be cautious this time around.”

“Well, I wouldn’t be if I were you. That man is a total catch.”

“I don’t want a purely physical relationship. I want to find love again and eventually get married and have kids.”

“I know you do, and I hope that happens for you. I just think you need to let go a little. Take that man to bed.”

“Kinley, I am terrified of going to bed with him. God, what if it’s awful?”

“Then you’d know to move on. Find someone else. Look, you lived in a passionless marriage for three years. You need someone to show you how it can be. I know you loved Stuart, but all he cared about was his military career. He chose it over you.” Kinley shook her head. “I don’t mean that the way it sounds. I admire him for serving our country, but he wanted that more than he wanted you. Please, take another chance.”

“I’ll think about it.”

“Please do. You need to experience some hot, sweaty sex.”

“God, stop. You’re a bad influence.”

“I have fun. You should try it.” Kinley grinned.

Addison laughed. “We’ll see. I’m seeing him tomorrow evening. He’s bringing a pizza and I guess we’ll watch some TV.”

“Or make out.”

“That too. God, he kisses so good,” Addison said and sighed.
