“I don’t need to hear that. I need a man.”

“Yeah, you do.”

As the day wore on, they stayed busy. Addison was happy when days flowed by without any problems. Every time the bell chimed announcing a customer, she hoped it would be Cody, but he didn’t come into the store. Although he didn’t say he’d stop by, she was hoping he would. He had to be busy though, so she’d wait until tomorrow night to see him.

Cody entered the Feed Store and turned to look at the corkboard. He needed a manager fast. He was being run ragged with trying to do everything. He didn’t have time to work with the men and hand out work orders. He worked from his office, but he wasn’t getting that work done since he had to litigate jobs to his men and oversee them. He looked at the slips of paper pinned to the board. There were a lot of people looking for work.

“Cody?”

He turned to see the sheriff of Clifton County, Sam Garrett, staring at him.

“Sam, how are you?” Cody shook his hand.

“I’m great. What are you doing here?”

He had met Sam at Vivian and Gray’s wedding and liked him. He was a good sheriff, and an even better man. From the minute he met Sam, he treated him as if he’d known him all his life. That’s the way it was in small towns.

“I moved here. I bought a house on Rawlings Road.”

“That’s great. I hope you like it here.”

“I do already.”

“I’m surprised you didn’t look for a place in Hartland.”

“I wasn’t even looking for a place when I saw the sign for the property, I had to look. It’s a great place.”

“That’s a nice area out that way.” Sam nodded at the board. “Are you looking to hire?”

“I need a manager. The one I had in Helena, isn’t interested in moving here. Three of my ranch hands came with me, but they’re too young to manage the place.”

“I see. Well, let me look at the board. I might see someone who would be a good choice for you.”

“I’d appreciate that, Sam.”

“No problem. It’s best to have someone tell you who would work out for you. Some of these names are people who just pass through. Hell, they might not even be here anymore.”

“Okay. I need to buy some feed for my bulls too. So, I thought I’d look at the board while I’m here.”

“Do you buy from Ash?”

“No. I didn’t even think of that. Damn, Ash grows feed for just about any livestock. I should have remembered that.”

“It’s the best way to get it. You can pick up small bags of it here, but if you’re raising bulls, then you need to get a truckload delivered. It won’t be long before colder weather moves in, it is September after all, and if you have Ash deliver it, you don’t have to worry about running out and having to make a trip to town.”

“I’m raising bucking bulls.”

“Check at the counter to see if Beckett Feed supplies that.”

“I’ll do that. I’ll get a few bags while I’m here though. I don’t want to run out.”

“I get that. Oh, here.” Sam removed a paper from the board. “Levi Thomas is a damn good worker. I know the ranch he’d been at was sold and he didn’t stay because he didn’t care for the new owner, but he was manager there for years. I’d call him over any others on the board.”

Cody took the paper from Sam, then shook his hand again.

“I appreciate it. I’ll call him and have him come out. I’d better get some feed, then head home. Thanks again, Sam. Have a great day.”
